E61 M5 exhaust mod - yes or no?
Discussion
This guy seems to have done a fair few of these now.
What do you reckon, worth a go? My only concern is that he has to cut the rear boxes off to mod.
My car is under BMW warranty so makes me a little twitchy.

IMO the V10 deserves some decent backboxes, not some muffler delete job which will sound too raspy.
e.g. something from Evolve or Meisterschaft (not cheap...) which don't drone but produce an awesome yet refined noise under acceleration.
Would be very interested to see how you find them if you do decide to go that route though!

in theory it's unlikely BMW would know about it for warranty work?
You mean apart from the big weld marks? Exhaust isn't covered under BMW warranty anyway though.

Paul is over on M3 Cutters forum. Plenty of threads under the M3 V8 section over on cutters, would have thought he must have done about 100 M3'S or so. He's done a couple of E60 M5's. A guy on BMW5 series forum had it done to his M5. Its not a back box delete like someone mentioned. If you don't want too much noise go with 2 pipe wrap. What do you reckon, worth a go? My only concern is that he has to cut the rear boxes off to mod.

I also have a BMW warranty on my E60 M5 so I know what you mean about modifications. I bought a new Eisenmann sport for my E39 M5 when I had that and it was just right. I've listened to the Eisenmann sport on the E60 M5 in the flesh and its perfect. I'm really fussy when it comes to exhaust noise, had a go in one with Supersprint rear boxes and it way too loud and drone was horrible yet the owner loved it and thought it was perfect.
Give Paul a ring and have a chat to him about the exh mod, he's a really nice guy and never heard any bad reviews on his work.
Reading the ebay description, I don't see how this solution can be non-drony... also Cutters has a slightly... shall we say, louder audience so not sure if I'd completely trust the opinions on there
Is the Eisenmann Sport noticeably louder than stock? Most reviews seem to indicate that they don't seem to make that much of a difference.

I know exactly what you mean about cutters.
When I had my E39 M5 people were saying how good the back box delete was. I had a ride in a fellow members M5 with delete and it sounded horrible to me and way to noisy and boomy. Also went in Leezamonkeys M5 with Hayward & scott which sounded the same too much bass like an American V8, not my cup of tea.
Eisenmann Sport on the E60 M5 is slightly louder than standard on idle and when driving normally only a slightly different tone to standard. It's only when you give it some that you notice the difference. It's nothing like the race version which is a lot louder than stock. If I was going to buy back boxes for my E60 I would go for Eisenmann sport again but I wou.d like a ride out in an M5 that has had the 2 pipe mod to see how it sounds.

I have the Evolve Etronic exhaust" having the option of being able to close the valves without losing power is well worth the price in my opinion.
Most importantly there is no drone

Sounds nice.
I think the issue for the guy that started the thread is that he is running the Mondial warranty so is worried that if he fits an aftermarket exhaust he may be leaving himself open to having claims rejected. It clearly states in the policy car must not be modified. When I took the Mondial out the lady asked me on the phone if the car was factory standard as this is a requirement. Saying that I have known people with mods to get claims paid but I was talking to a E60 M5 owner at Santa Pod last year who said his throttle actuators packed up and Mondial rejected the claim as his car had remapped, they found that out when doing the diagnostics on the car so that cost him about £1500 !!!!
What the guy is saying is that if he has the exhaust mod carried out by Paul the welder then it's not going to be noticed as the car will still be running factory silencers and pipes.

Ecain63 had a Hayward and scott system. Sounded nice but wasn't too droney or loud
Yes I did! And it was lovely! lolBut the exhaust isn't covered by the warranty, so I'd doubt that they'd go around checking if the exhaust is standard for a throttle actuator claim for example.
Remapping is a different kettle of fish, as they can easily claim that some component failed because of the increased power.
Easiest way would be just to call up BMW/Mondial and ask.

If this fella's welding skills are top notch you shouldn't get any droning noise.
Sorry but his welding skills have little to nothing to do with whether or not there's droning. Droning is a function of acoustics, pressure pulses and heaven knows what else but not the welding.Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
