I've had my E92 M3 cab for nearly 3 years now and am looking at changing cars now and have test drove an M4 cab in which I liked it but wasn't blown away by.

I have spec'd one up and it comes to just shy of 64k and to me that is an awful lot for a BMW when I know in 3 years time I will do well to get half of that back.

On the other hand I could shell out another 10k and get a 2007/8 Ferrari F430 cab and I know in 3 years time it won't of lost anything like 30k. I'm definitely learning towards the latter due to the lack of deals/discounts BMW are willing to offer even though sales of the new M4 are very poor.

Just bear in mind the F430 will make the BMW seem almost saintly in terms of fuel consumption and practicality. Other than that the Fezza is a blast!

To be honest I don't use my M3 as much as I should do as I use the Range Rover day to day so the MPG is not an issue it will be a weekend/summer car and as long as it puts a smile on my face it can do whatever MPG it wants.

I was surprised that there were no deals/discounts on the M4 especially after they told me sales weren't as good as they'd hoped.

8% discount is achievable on a new order with a 6.4apr if finance is required. Not the best but it's better than nothing. I am probably going to wait till better deals are available before I swap my E92. I' think I'd prefer the M4 if it came with the E92's V8. It's powerful enough for me and sounds better.

I can't ever imagine a Ferrari and an M3 being a genuine comparison for many people, but I would definitely opt for the 430 if you can live with the "drawbacks".

I guess the only thing to be sure of is that you don't have any wince-inducing bumps in the road near where you need to keep it - I don't know about the 430 but the 355/360 are certainly not multi-storey friendly.

Well a 07/08 F430 and a new m4 aren't a million miles away price wise now and my current M3 is only used as a weekend/toy car. Its the speed bumps and pot holes that worry me as my old man scraped his Ferrari the first day he picked it up

Trust me when I say there are discounts out there, there's a thread about this very subject the best deals are on the M5/6 at the moment.

Not a BMW car but my wife's Audi S3 sounds just like a diesel on start-up. I swear if I didn't know it was a petrol I would believe it to be a diesel from the noise. Changes once you get it shifting. Just modern turbo'd cars for you I guess.

Price-wise they are close, but then you could probably buy a used Merc ML AMG for the money - doesnt make it a "comparable car".

In any case, the Ferrari is very special but obviously if you want to be discreet then forget it! I never give two thoughts about taking any of my BMWs anywhere or parking them anywhere, with a Ferrari every time you go somewhere you haven't been its always a bit of a worry - little dips as you go into a drive suddenly become serious challenges. And depending on the severity of the speed bumps where you live it is sometimes impossible to get over all of them without a little tap.

Worth it though, IMHO, but as a daily driver it doesnt have anything on the M3. However you don't need it as a daily - and I think the money is safer in the Ferrari. They're pretty well made cars and I don't believe servicing on the 430 is even that hideous. Only the carbon brakes would be if it had those fitted and they needed something doing

You want to hear the M3 on start up you'd swear a 335d had started up beside you.

Carbon brakes can now be refurbished rather than replaced.

Does anyone own an M4? I'm test driving one on Friday although it's a cabriolet and I'd want a coupe.

I was hoping to get the cayman GT4 but no luck with an allocation. Then also considering the 997.1 GT3 although they're over 20k more.

I have a 420d at the moment, pretty boring but the economy is great.

What kind of mpg are people getting and also how many miles out of a tank?

Would anyone recommend the car or something to steer away from? I actually quite like the sound after listening to the Nick Murray videos.

Yes, I have an M4. Got 14% off list. 8% is what they offer you when you walk in the door.

The sound I don't mind if Sport mode is engaged. On a cold start with Sport mode off it sounds okay, otherwise yes it does sound a bit diesel-y. I'm planning to remove the fuse so that the exhaust is always in Sport mode - even if the rest of the car isn't.

As for MPG it's "better" than my E92 but not massively. I can't see how they can claim 34mpg. I'm getting avg 26mpg... My E92 was doing 19-20mpg.

I love it though, the E92 looks and feels very dated now to me. And it is definitely faster. I was doing 90mph the other day and it was at 2,500 rpm - can't see the E92 doing that, would probably be on 4000 rpm at that speed.

I really don't get this 'sounds like a derv' boll locks - ours must be broken, because it sounds nowt like my diesel Transit.
Ours just has a deep thrum, my van has a clackety clack.

Most Porsches sound st on start up and tick over - bag of spanners in a tumble drier.

Get the 997.1 GT3 and enjoy for years too come and long after the M4 has depreciated to nothing and the turbo nutter brigade have moved onto their next fix the GT3 will be worth every penny of what you paid for it and probally alot more!

I got my M3 in Nov & sold it just over two weeks ago, It's not a bad car in anyway shape or form I just didn't get on with it.

The things I didn't like were that the interior didn't feel special enough, the exhaust note after K&N & an Akrapovic system were fitted it was much better I loved the looks I chose the M3 over the M4 because IMO it made the Flared arches a more prominent feature i never tired of lookig at it the performance was great when pushing on but not so good when not.

Anyone who's looking to buy one take it for an extended test drive it might be just what you're looking for, but also see if you can get a test drive of an Alpina B4 you might be very surprised.

From videos I'm one of the few it seems that thinks it sounds great.

That sounds like a good deal, I was looking at used ones with a 1-5k miles, although the price seems to be around what you paid new.

26 isn't so bad, my last TT did 23 although I'm currently getting 46mpg on a 100 mile round trip to work each day.

Any chance of a picture of yours?

Have you seen the video where the valves are removed or always open? Think it sounds nice, this might be what you're talking about
