Get the 997.1 GT3 and enjoy for years too come and long after the M4 has depreciated to nothing and the turbo nutter brigade have moved onto their next fix the GT3 will be worth every penny of what you paid for it and probally alot more!
They are one of my favourite cars although the 20k extra outlay is what would put me off, although I'd probably lose that 20k on the M4 eventually and I doubt the GT3 will do lose anything.

I'm yet to try a GT3 though, i'll try and get a drive in one soon although they're few and far between.

My current car is my first diesel and I do quite like the torque / delivery. If I had the choice between the two it would be the GT3 (without test driving) just that extra 20k means waiting longer

I got my M3 in Nov & sold it just over two weeks ago, It's not a bad car in anyway shape or form I just didn't get on with it.

The things I didn't like were that the interior didn't feel special enough, the exhaust note after K&N & an Akrapovic system were fitted it was much better I loved the looks I chose the M3 over the M4 because IMO it made the Flared arches a more prominent feature i never tired of lookig at it the performance was great when pushing on but not so good when not.

Anyone who's looking to buy one take it for an extended test drive it might be just what you're looking for, but also see if you can get a test drive of an Alpina B4 you might be very surprised.
Is there anything about the drive/handling that you didn't get on with? What have you replaced it with?

I didn't replace it in the end the idea was to finally sell my CLK63 or the Other Halfs C63 but after having it for a while I didn't gel with it it seemed to be a bit to busy & I couldn't find a setting that I got on with, to much choice to be honest it seemed to be hyper or stodgy as I said when you were on it I really had some fun with it but low speed it didn't work for me so I've decided to keep my CLK63.

Funnily enough the OH replaced the C63 with an Alpina D3 which she really likes in her words a "less shouty car than the M3 the interior feels a bit more special" plus it's fast & has so far averaged 41.8mpg over the last 4 weeks.
She does say the C63 interior & seats were better plus there was that V8 engine note.

That's why I think the B3 could well be the pick of the bunch.

Based on all the threads about these cars it seems most people expect a high torque, rear wheeled drive car to behave like an RS4 even in crappy conditions. I thought the whole point of an M car is that is it takes a bit of thought and skill to get the most out of it.

The exhaust note as standard is not great but a free 15 min tweak helps a lot. Is it a tad frustrating that you can't give it full beans in cold or wet conditions, yes it is but that's nothing new. However when you hook it up properly it's really good fun and the DCT makes thrashing it very rewarding.

Would I prefer a Golf R, oh come on let's get real. If I wanted something seriously quick and planted car then I'd buy a GTR or a 911 turbo, certainly not a shopping trolley. The M3/M4 is a rapid car, it's even more rapid with a simple bolt on mod.

As the used values come down it will be a monumental package. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to dry roads and a tweaked 480bhp power plant with a ludicrous amount of torque.

From videos I'm one of the few it seems that thinks it sounds great.

That sounds like a good deal, I was looking at used ones with a 1-5k miles, although the price seems to be around what you paid new.

26 isn't so bad, my last TT did 23 although I'm currently getting 46mpg on a 100 mile round trip to work each day.

Any chance of a picture of yours?

Have you seen the video where the valves are removed or always open? Think it sounds nice, this might be what you're talking about
That's the one... Doing it this weekend, will upload pics also.

They're cheaper than you think.

The gt3 is clearly the one that will appreciate but not sure the comparison here it's a weekend car only and something to get as a second or third car. It's a used track car vs a new everyday sports saloon, really pointless comparison. If you are buying the M4 purely as a toy get the gt3

I never made a comparison, they are just two cars that I like.

The car I buy will be my daily driver for now so going by that it would probably be best to get a GT3 once I have another car to do the motorway miles in.

I test drove an M4 twice on the weekend. The one I tried wasn't run in so I had to be careful with the revs. Even with that constraint I absolutely loved it. I really like the sound.
As I drive a normal 4 series daily, I'm happy with the size. It felt so much more planted than mine and turn in was great. I love how it can go from a docile car which you could pop to the shops in and then all hell breaks loose when you boot it.

I'm really considering it, just need to find one with the right spec and a good price.

Take your pick there's a lot of choice out there but before you do try to go out for a test drive(if you're close to them) in this, it's the only one for sale in the UK:

& have a listen to what Chris Harris has to say about it, (admittedly it's the B3 not the B4 but you'll get the idea)

Thanks for that mate, i'll definitely aim to try the Alpina, I'm near Stansted so a bit of a trek but not for the right car.

There's a white one for sale at BMW in ediburgh which seems to be around the same price as these private ones.

On another subject, I take it you have a ZX10? Nice. I had a Big Bang R1 until it was stolen, now have a gsxr600 for the road (going to sell) and a 750 for the track.

Yes I have a ZX10R I've always had one since they came out in 2005 but the new one's to small for me (6'7)so now it's the BMW S1000 for track/commuting & an MV F4 for having fun on the 750's are good bikes great fun.

Defiantly try & get a test drive I think the D3 is great & have no complaints but think that the B3/4 is the pick of the bunch, I got mine from Aberdeen it was well worth the trip & a great drive home.
