Ordered an M5 last week and am now searching for insurance, is a tracker mandatory on these cars? My previous cars have been M3's and 911's, I didn't have to have trackers fitted to those but the M5 seems to be different from an insurance perspective.

Any help/experiences/advice is greatly accepted.

No tracker needed for me. I'm with Aviva at the moment. I came from a 335d xdrive and my policy cost was the same albeit with double the excess.

No tracker needed with Tesco either, who were by far the cheapest for me.

It might be mandatory for the OP though depending on his circumstances eg theft claim history, or address.

Interesting I have a 335d xdrive and pick my M5 up on the 1st March I'm also with Aviva, I hope they do the same for me.

Although I did have to have a tracker on my 911 but never on the 3 x M3 I've had. I hope I don't as they are pain, cost money and well I don't want the car back if it gets stolen by some low life.

My insurance is also for renewal for 1 March. A bit of an internet search gets me a few policies below £300 and a good choice of decent policies and terms for below £325.

Maybe it shows I'm just getting a bit old!

Quick internet check on each of their respective websites suggests in order (cheapest first)

Privilege
Aviva
Churchill (10% more than Privilege)
Tesco (50% more than Privilege)
LV
Allianz

Will weigh up quality of cover next to ensure comparable

Thanks everyone!

I'm with Tesco & paying £336 for Class 1 with no Tracker required.

Saying that the renewal was more than that, but following a check on the old price comp sites & a call back to Tesco, they matched the online quote & my renewal then dropped to the £336. TBH it's the least i've paid for insurance on the most expensive car i've ever owned (go figure).

Just renewed with Quote me happy.

Due to a spate of car thefts in the local area my renewal has shot up by and extra couple of hundred. However, i have just done a confused.com search and Admiral is popping up at £767 (with a black box fitted.. f**k that), or £990 without.

Might consider changing today based on the £990.

No tracker.

£334 with direct line. £500 excess, protected no claims and guaranteed hire car plus (a car if similar physical size to your own).

Anyone got better than that with similar terms?

33, Cotswolds with 10+ years NCD. I don't think I have ever paid less than £300 for insurance, so I guess the direct line price is good for an M5. Not sure how they are to deal with though?

My cheapest quote was £295, but I need to check small print first to make sure European driving is covered and check where repairs would be undertaken if the worst should happen. But I had a number of quotes sub £325 that looked like they have decent cover.

Looks like Privillige are the best for me, once I set the car value to £74,999 all quotes plummeted and no longer insisted on a tracker. Went from £1k+ with tracker on confused.com to £380 no tracker. I put the full list price in originally (£78k) and as I type this, I should probably put the actual price paid into the online quoting tools.

Given the car has connected drive, you can track it yourself via an iPhone. So a tracker device surely becomes redundant?

The connected drive BMW Remote app will only allow you to track the location of the car if its ignition is off and it's within 1 mile of your location at that time, for "privacy reasons". Stupid but that's how it works.

Admiral called me today to let me know that my policy was up for renewal soon and that the great renewal was £1800! I only paid £1300 last year.

A quick check on confused (using 'close' but not exact details) found me that admiral were still the cheapest for me but at £1284. Why can't they just be honest?

I'll try the others mentioned in this thread.....Admiral reeeallly pissed me off late last year so would pay a little extra even to go elsewhere just so I don't hve to give them cash.
