Thinking of changing my E60 M5 and since my wife picked up her 16 plate Golf GTI the other week my M5 feels like a dinosaur compared to the GTI.
Had a look at a 2013 Audi RS4 avant this morning but can safely say I won't be buying one. In the flesh they just don't look that great. Had a look at a September 2013 F10 M5 this morning as well which to me seems on another level compared to the RS4, I'm talking looks and cabin finish, the BMW just looks a lot plusher inside. This was a Monte Carlo blue with only 15K miles and one owner who has just traded it in for another brand new M5. The car look to me like it's been garaged all its life as it is immaculate inside and out, no scratches or dings anywhere. I am super fussy about my cars so they have to be just right condition wise. It didn't have the sun protection glass which is great for me as I can't stand dark tinted rear windows. The down side is it only had a couple of optional extras from new, no TV which I do actually use in my E60 plus numerous other options I would normally look for in a used M5.
I'm a bit torn as it's such low mileage and immpecable condition in the right colour and would make a change to have the lighter leather rather than black but maybe I should wait for another with a better spec with similar miles. At least I do know that I don't want an RS4 !

Just to confirm, it seems like this one is a pre LCI version. I think you should hold out for a LCI version if possible.

Agreed, this is a pre LCI (the steering wheel gives it away).

It must be one of the last pre LCI's as II thought the facelift was around August 2013. What are the differences ?

It's my local dealer just a few miles down the road and they also look after my E60 hence why I went down to view it. Thinking about it I would rather buy one with M multifunction seats, split fold back seats and comfort access as a minimum. I'm in no rush to change the car, gave mine a clean on Sunday and booked a trackday at Bedford for end of the month to get some use out of it.

Take your time and get one that ticks all of your boxes. These cars are almighty !

They do everything so well.

As others have said the surround / top view camera is a pretty good feature especially if you live and drive in town.

I am buzzing after a little excursion into Europe....oh boy do these cars (I have an M6 Gran Coupe) come into their own on some high speed drives !

I sort of hate you just a little. Ultimate dream car for me is the M6 GC. BLoody getting one down to around 40-44k for the spec/year/millage I would like seems to be alot harder than I thought it would be.

I just hope there is a flood of ex lease cars coming soon lol

I've been running one as a daily for a couple of months.

Absolutely incredible car, you won't be disappointed.

Its probably the best daily you could have when specced with rear fold seats. I've done 600 in two days, i always throw a bike in the boot and load timber and all sorts of st in the boot. Managed 26mpg last two days over 600 miles. Just awesome, it's going for a new Q7 and another smaller car in October. Sad times...

They'll be there soon enough I'm sure mate !

They produce way more power than factory number suggest too and get better with age.... For example a 20K mile example produced more than my one when I was on 4K miles on the rollers recently.

Engine / drivetrain especially on the LCI cars seem bullet proof so getting a well looked after used one makes a lot of sense indeed !

Good luck !

smile Thanks. I am usually a prolific test driver of cars but around 2 years ago I test drove a M6 Coupe 2013 model and as odd as it sounds I still remember exactly how it felt and it was nothing short of epic!
Since then I have never even bothered driving anything else, I look at other cars and maybe get close to buying them but I just cant do it. I'd have an M5 but I am nothing short of desperate for an M6 GC!

Fingers crossed some nice ones pop up soon!

I booted mine today joining a motorway, I know all owners say it, but the way these cars pull at indecent speeds is quite shocking.

I'm a serial car changer but I really couldn't face parting with mine. Lets hope the next M5 is a gem!

I'm two years into mine and haven't got itchy feet at all which is saying something, although with the depreciation it's probably best that way..

So.......

I find myself in an interesting position.

I used to do 600+ miles a week commuting for work, which my trusty old E39 530d did in a breeze. At 243,000 miles the poor thing died. I replaced it in October 15 with an 09' 535d that's been treated to a good quality remap that sees it at 370bhp/750nm of torque. I love the car, it's a fantastic daily, great to drive & is pretty sensible to run (so far).

In my Arsenal is an 03' 911(996) turbo that's heavily modded to around 630bhp, that is a keeper. I also have an E46M3 that's supercharged to 550bhp.

Now.... I have recently changed jobs, and find myself doing less than 1000 miles a month on average, and I'm away with work for weeks/months at a time. The poor E46 Hardly gets used, and I don't really need a diesel.......

You can see where this is going! Bearing in mind the 911 is a keeper, would you swap 2 mega BMWs (E46M3 & E60 535d) for an F10 M5? My man maths is working overtime, I'm thinking both cars are worth around 15k, so swapping two sets of insurance, MOT, tax & runnig costs for one M5 make sense, even as a daily?

M3 might be a bit more nimble & precise? The 535d a bit more "sensible", but maybe the M5 F10 is the perfect compromise?

Tell me I'm wrong!

I would sell both and put the money towards an F10 M5, no point in having the M3 if it's not getting used much. Much less hassle having 2 cars instead of 3, from my point of view anyway. I'm suprised an E60 535 sport D is still worth £15 K though, didn't realise they fetched that much, it's not a car that I have really looked at buying so don't check the prices but seems a lot for a 2009 diesel, it must be a nice example with very low miles. From what I've read any F10 model is way ahead of the E60 in terms of comfort and handling etc.Get them sold and start hunting for an F10 M5.

M5 would be the sensible option... Such a great all rounder, handling is incredible for a 2ton car, which is why it deserves the M badge... The engine isn't bad either....

High 20's MPG on a run and a tune and it won't be far off the pace of your tuned 911..

I use mine every day and since August am up to 13k even though I am frequently abroad. Why would you want to do miles in a snotter? I bought an M5 as the more miles I do, the less I want to put up with an ordinary car.

I have the split fold seat option + the comp pack which is a must if you ask me.

It makes a great tow car as well.

I had it on the rollers last week and it made 565 at the crank, 505ish at the wheels IIRC.

Hi Thurbs! We diced at Brands last year if you recall.

Another M5 tow car here, sadly now gone. Replaced with an S8, will be interesting to see how it compares over time.

I concur with that. Mine was a non-competition pack and I remember chasing an F430 through a roundabout and down an NSL dual carriageway. We were 5 up with luggage. There was practically nothing in it.

I remember well...

I nearly got a S8 having had a A8 4.2 previously. Awsome car and one which probably is faster and more comfortable than the M5. I didn't go for it because of the compromised driving dynamics, but it was close.

When are you racing this year? I have done 2 weekends so far with 750mc and CSCC with another one next weekend.

Yep, the S8 is definitely more of a luxury car but as you say the driving experience is not quite as sharp. In particular I find dynamic steering really odd. Maybe I will get used to it with time. One thing that I find unforgivable is the lack of split rear seats. That made a huge difference to practicality on the M5 especially on race weekends: made the M5 almost as good as an estate.

I was intending to race at Silverstone, Brands and Thruxton this year. Sadly work and family commitments mean I will have to pass on S'stone, so hopefully see you at Brands in June.
