ha ha .. congrats !

one thing I missed about the F10, I find that the more your really take it by the scruff of the neck and fling it about, the better it is

if you let it dominate you (which can easily happen because its big, heavy and an intimidating 600+ through the rear wheels) then it's not so great

drive it like a barge and it will be one .... load it up and give it some work to do and it comes alive more

Countdown - done a deal on one today. Thanks for all the input. In true PH fashion the man math worked outsmile Today's drive finalised the thoughts in my head - lovely 50 mile round trip to watch my daughter play rugby(!) in the Berkshire countryside and some great driving roads. The 535d was silent but deadly - there's no doubting the pace of it but there's not enough involvement, dead steering and no noise.

Jackal - I'm going to end up with a garage that mirrors yours!

Will put up pix when it arrives.

Cheers
Congrats! Would you be prepared to give an idea of the deal? New/used, lease/not etc?

Used from the AUC scheme. It's a 2012 car, 15k miles, bought outright £41k plus change. Not hugely spec'd but has the essentials I want.

Excellent, post pics when you get? I like the idea of doing this in the absence of the crazy lease deal but the facelift has done its job as I find myself thinking I'd look at the old style steering wheel each day and long for the new one. How do they do this to me, it's a steering wheel ffs and not worth 20k !

I had those exact thoughts too but with my sensible hat on (insofar as the words sensible and an M5 can be used in the same sentence) one has to draw the line somewhere. There will be a newer steering coming along in another 18 months time so put that one to bed. Remember its a c£90k car brand new - the steering will do just finesmile Just don't go looking at the finer details of the crease by the headlights on the LCI etc etc.

I did read somewhere that they imrpoved the steering feel on the LCI

Not done a back to back test (although ive driven both separately)

I can't confirm that but I have an LCI and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of feedback through the wheel.

I must be in a minority of one, then. Disappointing steering feel (but no more disappointing than any of its peers).

Makes sense. In terms of warranty I guess people just extend once the AUC warranty/balance of mfr warranty expires. Anyone know cost of m5 warranty extension?
And how I make the man maths stack up to a few miles commute to station cr park each day?!

No problem it's not that highly specced to be honest:

Sapphire black
Merino platinum leather
20" wheels
M Multi function seats
reversing camera
online entertainment
Internet
Privacy glass

It was in stock un registered, the only thing I would have changed is piano trim instead of aluminium, but it's over £1500 to retro fit that.

I think blue/silverstone sounds lovely. thumbup
My car is now arriving tomorrow a week earlier than expected, so I should have it by Monday smile

Good work OP.

Know exactly how you feel.

I was looking at 2012 cars at independent dealers for low-ish 40's but decided to opt for a low miles, high spec car from BWM main dealer for high 40's. For another 3 or 4k I could have had LCI. For another 5 or 6k, a 2014 car but as you say, at some point you got to draw a line or you may as well go the whole hog and just get a brand new car !

I can relate to that. This process started off with me looking to replace our X5 E70 with an estate and looking at E61s for around £10k - as a one car to suit most family purposes. To illustrate the issue when you don't have a particularly fixed budget in mind:-

The E61 thing didn't work out because the ones i wanted:
- 530is were too rare
- decent 530d or 535ds were £15k

For that much plus a bit of change, one could get into an F10 touring. So that process started. But all of the sub £20k cars tend to be 520d SE cars. I didn't want to go down that route so started looking for 535ds and went for an F10 535d touring £25k. I picked it up from a BMW dealer in the north west - one of those lovely early morning 3 hour train trips (with grim faced commuters) from home knowing that you're going to be driving your new car home.

Then the wife decides she can't sit lower down in an estate and wants to keep the X5 for herself - lets have a daily driver each - and i'm therefore stuck with the 535d - which is great (undeniably properly quick) but way too soft and squidgy. Whoever it was that said the F10's most must have option is adaptive drive hit the nail right on the head. The engine in the car is great but without the adaptive drive its wasted at best. If this was now going to be my daily driver it had to be something practical (to carry kids and particularly my road bike) but at the same time be entertaining.

I thought for a while that the F10 550i sport touring would be a great buy for me - with the adaptive drive. I visited some local dealers, scoured the internet and subsequently found out that probably less than 4 were registered in its' short production run - no longer available. And the chances of one of them coming up for sale soon, and having adaptive drive were too remote. So that option was out. Thought for a while about a 535i touring but not enough cylinders?? And they were rare too. Diesel dominated world.

Thoughts turned then to what could one buy if one wants a big petrol engined estate. An E61 M5 (touring) was a possibility but my only experience of one, a few years ago, when i lived with it for a week and averaged 11mpg put me off. That and the owner's never ending electrical problems.

Merc E63? RS6?

And then i had a motoring epiphany (one that i hope is a life changing moment) I can recall it vividly, gives me a lovely warm feeling - whilst lazily reading the spec of an AUC F10 550i saloon SE (no idea why i was browsing that car on the AUC site). The words "split folding rear seats" stood out at me. Could this mean i could fit my road bike into the car without having to take the rear wheel off (i find that such a pain in the backside)?? Some frantic google searches ensued. 3am was hit. That night I arrived at the conclusion that it would fit so attention turned to an F10 saloon. That'd be the M5 then.

I found the same budget creep - start out and before you know it you're looking at 14 plate cars at £55k. I settled on a July 12 car with 15k miles through the AUC.

Delivery to me has been delayed from tomorrow until Monday because they've found that they want to put new front discs and pads on the car (happy days) - by the time they've done that and the other AUC stuff, and given it their bodywork surgard protection treatment inside, out and to the wheels its going to take them longer than tomorrow morning which was originally planned.

Sadistically i enjoy the waiting (if only because its not too long, that would drive me mad) - because this kind of waiting, anticipating, like you have a secret, that only you know, right inside of you which is constantly smiling at you, whilst you go about your daily work (i was stood at a queue at Tesco today with everyone seemingly miserable around me and i had this interior perma smile thing going on smile) - it only occurs when one is eagerly anticipating a new car - or a road trip. And its nice to feel that for a wee bit longer.

Roll on Monday morning!!

Great read ! Singapore Grey has been my favourite M5 colour for a while and loving the black alloys, such a refreshing combination - not a big fan of monte carlo blue or whatever its called.
Just wish I could justify it for a trip up the road to live at a train station all day...that's what bangers/station cars are for? Always wanted an M car......

As above, it's very easy to forget the monster that lies beneath. Pottering around doing the regular chores she's as tame as any run of the mill F10, however when you bury that loud peddle you very quickly think (after the oh fk i forgot), what an amazing piece of machinery they are.
