Welshy, I've done 14500 miles in my M5 in 12 months. Averaging 17mpg.

Couldn't give a toss about fuel economy.

One of the very last things on my mind when buying it.

Although I'm delighted you're getting such terrific results in your car.

M5 frugal edition:

Yesterday I did similar distance and slightly higher average speed - have the 300bhp 535d no Eco pro was mainly in Comfort but did have one or two full revs accelerations air con on all the way.
Anyway I averaged 49mpg - I wasn't trying for economy not was I breaking speed limits (well a few times wink ).

The newer 313bhp 535d in Eco pro no doubt would have been deep into the 50's mpg.

So nearly 70% more efficient than the granny driven M5.
That's very impressive however I'd still rather have an M5 than a 535D.

Can I ask what point you are trying to make welshy?

If you drive an M5 or M6 I'm bloody sure in reality fuel economy is of interest but by no means a deal breaker.

My wifes 120D M Sport will do more MPG than your car and get me from a-b comfortably but I don't want to drive it......
Point is the thread title the M5/6 or 640d/535d so one post up about economy on the iconic M5 then post up the equivalent on the 535d. Nothing more.

However the M5's official combined is 28mpg and my version of the 535d is 46mpg --- is say both simply cannot even get remotely close to the extra urban economy., in fact you need a long drive just to beat combined values.

And yes of course I'd rather the M5 over my version but purchase price is a lot more and economy is 70-100% better and servicing is a fraction of the cost. Maybe the next car

640D mentioned, not 535D (just to clarify)

However I suspect it's not about the fuel, it's about the package.

I'm off tomorrow for a month on business and I'll miss driving the M5. Not sure I'd feel the same about not driving a 640D (or 535D!)

Eco pro doesn't do much for economy IMO - makes the car absolutely gutless and turns down aircon to the point it may as well be switched off. Never saw more than 45 mpg on the OBC in the 640d and that was taking it very easy - can't imagine a 535d would be much different. Still impressive considering performance however.

I did similar in my RS6 V8 C5 - I'm surprised that technology from 15 years ago hasn't improved efficiency yours should do 28mpg. My RS6 should do 19mpg I got a very very consistent 18mpg (once 26mpg on a long M way drive on a busy road so had to go with the flow). And I was frequently into rev limit in 3rd and then onto 4th and I loved the launching it from traffic lights so unless your sat in shocking traffic or utterly hooning it everywhere you might have a fuel leak

Your RS6 only had 450hp....M5/M6 put out close to 600hp not really comparable.

Mine had 4x4 weight
5 speeds not 7
No stop start
Engine design from the 90's not 15 years advancement

It's directly comparable - paint it as you wish it's claimed is 28mpg if the other poster just gets 17mpg that's terrible (is that even achieving urban cycle?

80% of combined mpg figure seems to be about the best you can hope for on diesel to turbocharged petrol cars in my experience so 17mpg isn't massively adrift from that.

My Golf R is supposed to be 13mpg more economical than my Boxster (39.7 vs 26.6) however in reality it's 2-3 mpg better tops.

Sorry, but you're not trying hard enough! Sorry for the crappy picture, for some reason it's way out of focus and by the time I realised the trip computer had reset itself.

That's 31.6 mpg at an average speed of 71 mph over 82 miles. Middle of a Tuesday afternoon mainly on UK motorways, plenty of traffic but no hold ups, door to door with cold start.

When driving more slowly, but over a longer distance, through rush hour

M6 GC with Competition Pack. Of course, economy is not the point of this car, but I think it's pretty impressive for the size and performance.

Now that is very impressive - near on 600bhp in a 2 tonne car with massive drag from wide rubber. The point is IF you ever needed to do such a drive you could /clearly not the main reason of buying such a great car but a nice problem to have.

My right foot is far too heavy to achieve that.

Ha. No fuel leak. I just don't care a jot about mpg. I do sit in a lot of traffic as I live in Central London but the point is I didn't get an M5 to see how high my MPG could get.

I got it because it's an unbelievable car. Ferries the family when necessary, work car, awesome across Europe to see my suppliers, competent enough on track (albeit too heavy), comfy and luxurious. And I like the way it looks too.

That's why you buy an M5 in my opinion.

+1

An M5 is an epic car. Who cares about saving on running costs, you don't buy an M car for that reason you buy it because you want to enjoy driving. If you can afford to run either, or if anyone offered you the chance to run either car for free for as long as you had it, I would be utterly shocked if anyone picked the diesel over an M car!

Diesels have there purpose and for me, I have only bought them to save money. I buy petrol performance cars when I want to enjoy my driving and have fun!

Agree with Boss, I am getting an average 19.5 from my pre run in service M5. I did return 25 mpg on a trip along the M4 into central London, but that was mainly because everyone was hogging the outside lane and I avoided any traffic hold ups.

But to be honest, the noise and power delivery are so intoxicating that any initial thoughts I had about mpg have long since gone out the window. I could never go back to diesel. I have had some seriously quick diesel cars, but the M5 is in another league.... I actually want to drive it, it's the closest I have got so far to the experience of riding my bikes.
