Agree with Boss, I am getting an average 19.5 from my pre run in service M5. I did return 25 mpg on a trip along the M4 into central London, but that was mainly because everyone was hogging the outside lane and I avoided any traffic hold ups.

But to be honest, the noise and power delivery are so intoxicating that any initial thoughts I had about mpg have long since gone out the window. I could never go back to diesel. I have had some seriously quick diesel cars, but the M5 is in another league.... I actually want to drive it, it's the closest I have got so far to the experience of riding my bikes.
Is the noise that good on the inside or is it created noise played through the speakers like the M3? Serious question I don't know.
As for external noise - for me it's nice but the E60 M5 WOT pulling away is superior

Re the noise, the idea of piped in sounds annoys people.

But to philistine ears like mine, I would never know the difference and windows open, dropping down the gears in M2 is just wonderful.

I actually think it's quite clever........

But I'm probably in the minority on that one.

You can't tell and it is as you say quite clever.

From the outside the M6 sounds great but inside its much quieter. Good for cruising but less good otherwise. I had an AC Schnitzer exhaust fitted to my F13 for that reason. Sounds much better now inside and out. Real sound drowning out the fake sound.

I can't tell what is artificial sound-wise but what I do know is that I've spent nearly every journey in the car with the sunroof open (great April weather as you know) and it definitely wasn't synthesised noise reverberating in the blackwall tunnel last night.

I drove from Marylebone to the Medway towns last night - 11mpg for the first 8-9 miles which levelled off at about 20 after a fast paced run down the A2/M2.

Couldn't care less! Every journey is something to look forward to - even the above on a Friday night.

It's funny how the piped-in sound bothers so many non-owners, yet comparatively few owners confused and anyone who's been in the car thinks it sounds great (including some proper petrolheads - I'm not just talking about my mother in law)

The exhaust sounds great (the real noise) and the piped stuff well I it's just the same sound brought into the cabin which I don't have an issue with.

I don't own one (still a poor student for the time being), have been in a new M5 and you can't really tell its fake really (unless you do the sunroof thing). The thing is with cars you can have a car that goes crazy fast in a straight line but can't really hear it and its unemotional (read 3L uber diesels - parents own one, its fairly rapid, but emotively soulless). The whole point of exhausts, v6/v8/v10/v12 petrol performance cars is the experience they bring and the noise they make, the sound created will no doubt help the experience and make you feel better. You wouldn't get that lovely v8 sound in say a 50+ mpg 520d? or 630d(sounds better), but its no M5.

People who have an M5/M6 buy them to have fun, or a useable Q car that has super car performance, most couldnt give a toss about fuel costs - and if they did WELSHBEEF wink they wouldn't buy an M5/M6 they'd buy a derv.

I guess its horses for courses and is mileage and use restrictive. As a car from A to B an 640D is plenty quick enough for anyone, but an M6 will be appreciably quicker and emotive in the way it goes about doing the same journey.

Id say if you're doing anymore than 12-14K miles in terms of fuel costs/depreciation etc its probably best looking at the 640d its still a good engine - however if your finances permit and you don't give a crap - just buy the M6 biggrinclap

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnsyV_NeiXM < M5 v M6 at Anglesey I know its not on the public road but a really good video imo. Prefer the colour of interior/exterior of M5.
M6 Sounds great.
0-100MPH M5 = 8.7 M6 = 8.5 takes to 150 for m6 to show an appreciable difference in acceleration (1.1 secs difference between the two)
Not that the latter speed has much relevance on public roads.

If this can't convince anyone that a v8 is better than a derv I don't know what can....

Ignore the finance deal, load of bks, IM sure you would get a deal for significantly less than that. Only nearly 1/4 of the car price on top.
Finance doesnt always work in ones favour. M5/M6 always have depreciated like a stone too :headbang: Thats also based on the fact you only deposit the minimum of 15K.

My reaction is based on my recent purchase of a new M5, and knowing the deals available smile

I reckon the Jahre will be running quite far north of 600bhp by the way. I'm told even the 'standard' M5 is past that mark.

Indeed - 560bhp is deemed conservative at best - a damned lie at worst! Not that I'm complaining about it hehe

Ive heard the standard car Dynos at least 660bhp which is nuts!

How you finding the M5? Unfortunately I'm an uberfast audi fan (RS6) but I do love the M5.
Not sure I would personally pay the premium for a Jahre version on a family car though!

Matt - you can have my opinion too - I'm a bit of a dyed in the wool BMW guy but have a great admiration for the RS6 and would have certainly very seriously considered one if the M5 wasn't considerably cheaper by virtue of discount and 0%. I like its aggressive looks, estate form and the traction advantage in certain conditions.

I bought mine spontaneously and blind having not as much as sat in one. Colleagues thought I was nuts - petrolhead friends/brothers thought I was brave but with a degree of admirarion.

3,000 miles in and I'm totally blown away by how good it is. I've gone from being mpg 'considerate' to simply not giving a flying fk how often it needs to be filled because every drive is fun in some way. As an A road bruiser its devastating, effectively a 5-seater superbike which renders the notion of being "stuck behind" slow moving traffic a rather quaint concept. I live in the sticks where traffic is generally light but slow. On a motorway its hard to stick to normal speeds because of the effortlessness with which it will accelerate hard to(wards) its limiter. It does have to be treated with utmost restraint but that does not mean the power is inaccessable, unusable or "too great in the real world" - it just has to be deployed with very careful consideration. I'm taking it to Berlin in a few months so will be interested to see how it drives in its more natural setting!

Mine is being detailed this week so I'll take some pics when it returns. I went for quite a stealthy look personally and I'm very pleased by the way in which it blends in.

I'm not sure about 660bhp, but early 600s would be my guess.

The M5 is astoundingly fast, intimidatingly so unless driven in bone-dry conditions. I've posted on here a couple of times about an occasion I nearly had the rear overtake the front at 90 on an arrow straight road.

In truth the RS6 is probably the faster car for the majority of the time given British weather conditions, but in those conditions the M5 is more suited I believe it is a lot better.

I appreciate the diversity of opinions on here clap
I have heard that audi are very stingy with discounts/packages on the RS6. You just echoed that point that the M5 is a much better value proposition (although limited in less than ideal conditions - which I guess you will have another vehicle that can be used?).

Cars aren't really about the top speeds, as most won't get near that. But more the 0-120 times, torque and delivery that are important. How they make you feel etc (and clearly you feel good driving it as economy has gone out the window laugh

Im sure it will be a fantastic GT car and will eat up all the miles no problem! Maybe get yourself a spare license and some radar protection/jamming equipment as I am sure it'll be difficult to restrain yourself biggrinlaugh

I still think its a shame they don't offer an estate version of the M5 frown but they didn't sell that many of the old generation. (Also was reading this morning that they are developing AWD systems for M cars which I really hope is an option rather than compulsory as not everyone wants awd but I think it'll be great being more competitive with audi)

I just wish I could afford an M5/M6 even the old generation :P ..... being a student isn't everything unfortunately.!

I do have a "backup" car coming soon in the form of a Golf R which will inevitably get used to soak up some business mileage. I expect I'll put winters on both so I'll be okay when conditions are suboptimal.
