I think were getting off track of the title.. "daily driver" the M6 is of course a better car than the 640d but the 640 has alot of plus advantages as per the title.. I suppose it dose depend how many miles your covering,i'v got 45K on mne now and can't think of any thing better as a " daily" and that's leaving the i8 in the garage most mornings..!

What is the M5 0-100mph?

On my commute back home today traffic was heavy but flowing /impossible to overtake as oncoming was constant. So I simply had a nice relaxing drive all the way back in lovely comfort while getting just shy of 48mpg in the process.
In this weather Id say a 275 GTS would have been the ultimate machine to cover the distance smile different budget though and it's MPG is epically low 7-8mpg driving it properly! Would make M5 owners wince at the fuel bills.

0-100 is widely quoted at around or just over 8s but I should think that is in optimal conditions.

I hardly ever see 48mpg in my 125d!!

The 0-100 is 7.8 seconds and the 535D is 13.5 according to Fastlaps...........that's nearly 6 seconds faster - and you think your car is fast wink

I'm very happy you had a great relaxing drive back and got 48mpg.

I'm driving from the South Coast to Manchester, onto Derby and back Thursday and it doesn't matter what the MPG is, I'll have wonderful time regardless of speed, and the car is very, very comfortable as your is yes

Stop trying to justify your car and enjoy it for what it is, that said I've never spoken to a fellow M5 driver who said "do you know what, I should have bought a 535D, I'd be getting 48mpg on this journey"

More figures for you....

Champagne taste lemonade money springs to mind (or actually I'm pretty tight on certain things).

7.8 seconds - that's Lambo Murci and nearly F40 quick in a 4 door family saloon. Bonkers fast

For now ive tie wrapped the secondary flap open on the tail pipes as it is rather quiet. It won't harm anything nor give any performance gain but it does sound nice on a cold start and gives a little more voice than stock.
does this throw up any warning lights?

Interesting to see the M5 performance figures quoted - no wonder the M6 felt as quick as my SLS! I agree with the earlier post about the head up being vital - on the test drive it was only the HUD that made me realise just how fast I was going. The SLS isn't nearly as cossetting so you do have a pretty good idea that your speed is high when you're pedaling hard - although just how fast can still be a surprise...

The M6 I test drove has dropped in value from £112k to £58 in 18 months - and yet, incredibly, it seems to make more financial sense to lease a new one eek I'm still undecided what to do, waiting until the lease on my C63 ends in September seems sensible as I guess the deals on lease M6s may be even better by then - although I might end up having to use something else as a daily driver for a little while after the C63 goes back...

515 miles today up to Manchester via the M25, M40 and M6 and then back home

Some roadworks (as those in the area will know) but by no means a leisurely drive and then back in good traffic.

23.1mpg average which I'm happy with.

And not at any point did I think - do you know what a 535D or 640D would be just as much fun laugh

BTW, to the driver of the other F10 M5 driver reg M5 XXX who had a conversation with me in traffic through open windows, firstly nice car mate wink cheers for the chat and I had no idea how bloody meaty the M5 looks compared to a standard F10 (bearing in mind we never 'see' our own cars on the road from the outside!)

Same - only one I've seen since I've had mine and I spotted it a mile away passing on opposite carriageway of M6, in Imperial Blue like my own.

They are easy to distinguish when you know the car. A month ago I wouldn't have noticed.

So far I haven't come up against anyone "trying it on" either - that or I haven't noticed.

I am a little bit the other way in that I think the M5 looks pretty much the same as a 520d and they are really subtle and stealth and I really like that about them and unless you know about cars you would never imagine that there are 560 horses under the bonnet.

That is what makes me like them a little more and they are a really good disguised weapon.

I struggle to spot them at a glance to be honest. The wheels always look a similar style to those available on M Sport models and the mirrors are much the same as opposed to the e39 and e60 having oval mirrors and regular cars having clearly rectangular ones.

Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

The wider body due to the wider track and flared arches, the 10" wide heavily dished wheels, that lovely slanted forward stance the car has, agressive front end, rear defuser and 4 pipes.

Subtle yes but it adds up to a whole lot more than a 520d.

The plainest M5 for me is the e39.

I've had quite a few shouts of nice car mate! At the petrol station more than any other car I've had TBH

I agree but I just find it easier to spot the e39 as, despite the bodywork looking identical to a sport, the wheel design and mirrors are an easy give-away at a glance from any angle.

Indeed hehe

Patrick - easiest giveaway from front is lack of foglights.
From side you have the vents and from rear, well thats obvious!

For me the most distinguishing feature of M cars has always been the colours!

I think it's much harder to spot a Black/Silver or non-M specific colour M car.

I had a black one behind me the other day and at first glance I didn't know which model it was but I also looked for the lack of foglights too so I just pulled into the inside lane and watched him fly by me.

Me comparing the looks of the M5 to a 520d isn't meant to be a dig at it I just think they blend in pretty well but that's what I really like about them, obviously if you walk around a M5 you can pick the details out fairly easily but out on the road they aren't that obvious.

Whilst they are without doubt similar, the car has a slightly more aggressive stance.

Still, if someone doesn't now what I'm driving and try it on, they'll soon see the tailpipes as I whizz by biggrin

Much like the tt who flashed me on the M40 yesterday in his Q5 - I couldn't get out of his way, there was a queue of cars on my left you fecking idiot. Once I did pull over he was slightly embarrassed when he couldn't get past me hehe
