The strange thing is 840's were renowned for having terrible brakes.....!
Less mass, a different brake servo and a shorter wheel base probably help greatly. It is wierd how some brakes work like chocolate on some cars yet put them on something else and they work brilliant.

I believe the 4-pots were optional.

As standard they had the same calipers as the e36 M3 Evo, hence why it's a popular upgrade as the piston dimensions equal out. Meaning brake balance isn't affected.

Some E36 M3 models have wheels that have "BMW MOTORSPORT" written on them and some don't.

Does anyone know why this is so?

My old E36 M3 had the "BMW MOTORSPORT" wheels; were these unique to the Evo models or something?
Alloys with the 'Motorsport' script are forged.
Really? As above. My spec shows forged wheels, but I have no Motorsport script.
Can't answer that one, but take the E36 M3 GT, the proper LHD car. They were equipped with forged alloys as standard, they have the 'Motorsport' script, least every one I've ever seen has, not saying I've seen them all, but I do some one who has one.
