The ride quality in the back of the M3/4 is utterly appalling.
Harsh, noisy, clunky.
I think that is just a 3 series trait and when ever I sat in the back of our old E90 330d I felt sick and I just wanted to get out because of the things you describe yet I have never suffered with travel sickness before, I now pity anyone sitting in the back.Harsh, noisy, clunky.
To be fair, I'm only banished to the back when I stink of beer and garlic Biltong....
In the rear of my old E92 M3 was a little better because of the lack of runs flats and rock hard M sport suspension, with the M3 on normal tyres and EDC it rode pretty well in comparison.
When i took my 3 series into the local dealers for a service there was a new M3 being looked over by a young bloke. I hung around and after a few minutes they fired it up, and i was a little disapointed. It burst into life, and then settled in a metallicy rasp, kinda like the E46 M6 engine, but it sound muffled and a bit more flat. Revving it sounded a bit flat aswel, then once it warmed up its idle sounded like a 1998 525d. I was a bit let down, i love BMW, love the look of the car and the interior and really wanted to absolutely love the new M3/4 and yearn for it one day. Obviously this was just my experience, i never drove it, just that initial start-up and revs sounded crap. The lucky chaps who own them have a better opinion.

My Womans E90 with exhaust mod sounded ike an F1 car.Her F80 sounds like muffled diesel especially with the synth sound, it's even more disappointing than the cost cutting interior
Whilst I agree the M3/4 don't sound he best, confusing them for a derv makes think some of you need a hearing test.
It sounds nothing like my Transit van....
That aside, we'll be looking to change ours in September this year and I'm tying to find an alternative - don't want another M3.

I heard a 435i M Sport being given a good thrashing a while back and that sounded like the M3/4 should sound. The classic BMW straight-six sound was there in abundance and the revs sounded like they were going satisfyingly high. Of course, the revs on the M3/4 go just as high, but they've somehow managed to make it sound like it never gets past 4,000. Very frustrating.
Interesting to read views on the E92/V8. I ran the coupe from 2007 to 2014 and agree the engine provided a linear power curve which was a joy particularly on track days. Indeed my BMW driver training coach preferred it to the current S55 turbo unit.
However as a daily driver I feel my F80 CP is far more convincing in making brisk progress, given the torque available overtaking is quicker and therefore safer.
Overall I think there is a natural desire to get back to cars we may have owned and enjoyed. I know I look at M3 CSL's and wonder why I sold mine in 2005. On the other hand the SMG was awful and the brakes were not up to any serious use. The E92 was/is a good drive however the F80 suits me very well and feels a step up as a package.Maybe in 2020 the 4 wheel drive hybrid M4 will pose a change or not dilemma

I'm currently looking at swapping my E92 M3 for a CP M4 but I have the nagging feeling I'm going to regret doing it. The E92 M3 is such a great drive and it sets such a high standard...I'm worried that the M4 won't live up to it.
I didn't regret one bit swapping my v8 for a std m4, certainly wont regret swapping for a CP. MitchT said:

I get that the new M3/4's can't sound as good as the E92 M3 but can't understand why they sound worse than the M2 and 335i. Aren't they all straight 6 turbos?bigtime said:

The M3/4 have an 'S' series engine in. The M2 and 335i/435i/340i/440i have an 'N' series engine in. The 'N' sounds like a proper BMW straight six. The 'S' sounds like a tractor. No idea why.Wills2 said:
That's a big move for you having had an e92 for what 10 years? Did you get much seat time in the M4?
Hi Wills...yeah over 8 years of E92 M3s - I rate them as overall the best car I've owned by quite a margin - but they do have to be set up right to realise their full potential.A while ago I had an M4 for a day and it was OK - its probably best that I don't have high expectations of it.
But having said that, I am looking forward to picking up the M4 CP on my birthday in a couple of weeks...I got a pretty good spec with a mega deal as they were short of target for Jan...plus a loan from Tesco bank at 3.25%. Happy days.
How are you getting on with your car?

It's OK, I really like the handling, the turn in is strong has a very grippy pointy front end the rear loads up and you feel like you can lean on it through a corner, feels very together and is quick to respond. I like the way the M3 looks with the flared arches and it rides pretty well, not a huge fan of the interior design and I wish mine had full leather to lift it up a bit.
I really like the 19" wheels lots of concavity as they say so they look cool and the car looks good and purposeful.
The engine delivers the goods that you can't deny, however it's a country mile away from the S65 and the car lacks that ability to be driven on the throttle with ease like the e92 can be, too much torque too quickly spoils any low speed fun unless you have plenty of room or are more skilled that me. (that's not hard to be)
You simply can't replicate the way 4.0ltrs, 8 Cylinders, 8 ITBs and a 8400rpm rev limit feels to drive with a 3.0 twin turbo.
But the F80 is a good car and does do a few things better than the e92, I'd say the front end is the stand out feature that you notice when you first throw it at a bend.
