Unfortunately my parking OCD requires me to park straight in spaces & it's either Surround View or hang out of the door. Never fancied a Brian Harvey incident so i like knowing the proximity of everything around my car & Surround View provides that. Have also used the forward/front side cameras several times when pulling out on blind bends, but far less so than the parking advantages.

What's overtake assist? Please tell me it's not the is there a car next to me indicatorsmile
I've found it useless although I haven't used it for parking to be fair didn't know you could to be honest.

Sorry not overtake assist I think its called lane change assist a little triangle lights up in the wing mirror if its not safe to change lane, I had it on my old car and its a really useful driver aid, didn't realise how much I used it until it was gone.

I'm guessing you've not toggled the various available views? Agree the front & rear cameras only do what they say on the tin, so hardly Surround View although i find them somewhat useful, however the view from above is my default view & i find it invaluable as it shows the entire perimeter of the car, all obstructions/dangers & a physical view around the car of parking bays to the side, front & rear. Sensors still work as per normal & if you want to be totally accurate you can toggle between front & rear cameras to fine tune any parking.

I find the surround view useful to make sure I am 'aligned' with the parking space - especially as I am anal about trying to avoid car park dings from the doors of other careless drivers/passengers.

having lived with mine for a while now including a great road trip to the Highlands there are a few must have options which I would definitely look out for
top of this list are the m multifunction seats they are really comfortable an offer great adjustment
the lumbar support is also a must have for my occasionally dodgy back
the comfort access works really well and makes sense of the keyless start which otherwise feels a bit silly because you need to get the key out to unlock the doors and then find a space for them because you start a car without a key. it also enables you to open the boot by swimging your foot under the bumper and this is surprisingly useful when carrying bags
I would also specify the power boot lid I really like the button that enables you to lock the whole car when shutting the boot
soft close doors as I have a pet hate of kids slamming doors shut on cars and this prevents that once they get used to just pulling the door softly
the speed limit display it's a lot more useful than I thought I have come to rely on it a lot and its really well placed on the heads up display
the split folding rear seats are essential for me as I carry my road bike in it
one thing my car doesn't have which I would have liked is a heated steering wheel
hope this helps

Surround view is amazing. Genuinely invaluable once you learn to trust it and use it.

If i get another m5 i would also want the power boot, split folding rear seats, comfort access, m multi seats and the comp pack. The better headlining would be nice as well.

OT but are you likely to get another?

The folding rear seats still being an option is one that baffles me. Would make a saloon far more practical.

I would say the M seats are a must in an M car and good value too at £895 and lift the interior, the 20" wheels look good but expensive at £2000 I would spec them as they look much better than the dull 19".

An upgraded stereo would be nice (I don't have it and the standard set up is just passable) If you like lots of music but don't have a huge collection already then online entertainment is great.

I only have a rear view camera but I can see that surround view would be beneficial on a car this size.

Power boot is good & now enhanced for me as i only worked out a couple of months ago that you can shut the boot from the remote too.

Defo upgrade the music system.

its likely yes, ... will return to it next year when i'm in a new house with gates, cctv, tesla coil, machine gun etc.

will prolly also test drive a Panamera and Cayenne Turbo as well but may well end up with the M5 because the phrase 'unfinished business' would be understating it !

I don't remember speccing power boot, but my boot does pop open when pressing the boot button on the remote - is that just a standard feature?

Other options that I got: 20" alloys, reversing assist, lumbar support, seat heating (rear), m-multi function seats, internet, BMW Prof loudspeaker system, telephone USB audio, sun protection glass, and surround view (panoramic bird's eye view and 2 front side view cameras). Apart from internet, I'd probably spec the same again.

I didn't go for heated steering wheel this time - on the e60 m5, I had it and the steering wheel was thin and bumpy rather than the standard thick and smooth leather, which was a let down.

My F10 is 3 years old this month and I've decided to keep it. I've only done just under 10,000 miles (!!), probably 95% of which have been in London. Think I'll hang on to it for as long as I can get a BMW comprehensive warranty for it.
The depreciation is savage but it's worth it with this version of the M5.

Thanks for the input chaps. My current thinking is:
- Azurite Black (Silverstone interior)
- 20" wheels
- Piano Black trim
- Harman Kardon
- Universal remote
- comfort screen
- sun protection
- power sockets
- M seats
- comfort access
- surround view
- Service pack

Giving powered boot and soft close doors some consideration but these may be too decadent for me smile. Can't come to terms with paying £335 for split fold rear seats which should be standard!

If the dealer(s) are prepared to sharpen their pencil on OTR price, I'm in.

Yes I like the power boot as well very handy.

I'll also say the Individual extended merino leather option is nice to have as well you get a lot more leather in the cabin as a result not just a different leather colour, a good halfway house between the standard and full option.

Same for me. Split folding rear, comfort access, and comp pack.

Power boot is a bit of a whatever to me.

Had multi m seats and adaptive beam.

Cameras and surround view are a bit whatever to me also.

I am back in a 320d e91 for a year as a bit of a cost saving functional approach, if they bring out the m5 again as a touring i'd have one in a heart beat.

I have the silverstone interior in mine; it looks lovely but its a pig to keep clean. Next time i'd maybe want black leather.

BTW the upgraded music system is an excellent upgrade. I came across some great settings for it on a US based forum which i will post in a separate thread in a minute.

Cheers

Just to add a few of my thoughts, here are the options I went for...

343M 20" Wheels

In my opinion they look better than the 19s so worth it.

HK System

I don't listen to the radio and like to listen to music. After a bit of research the B&O didn't seem to offer anything more so the HK was a cheap upgrade.

Sun protection glass

Keeps the sun off the kids, if they're happier then I'm happier!

Adaptive LED Headlights

Wasn't sure, couldn't find out much about them so took a punt to 'future proof' more than anything.

Comfort Access

I've had it before and love just leaving my keys in my pocket for the whole journey. A lot easier now with kids in tow having the comfort access opening the rear doors too.

Speed Limit Display

A useful reminder in the HUD of what I should be doing wink

Surround view cameras

Makes parking a breeze. Lined up nicely in the lines every time.

12v Power Sockets

£45, why not?

Split Folding Rear Seats

More for the ISOFIX access flaps in the rear seats than the ability to fold the seats.

Options I passed on:

Powered boot lid: I'm paranoid about the kids trapping a finger. Stupid I know but kids do the silliest things.
Soft Close Doors: Considered it but my kids are too young to be closing the doors themselves at the moment and by the time they are old enough I'd prefer to chauffeur them in and out of the car to make sure they don't climb over the seats anyway!
Steering Wheel Heating: Had it on the last car and never used it.
Competition Pack: This is the one I was really umming and arring over. In the end I decided against it but still the doubts linger.

Looking more deeply at the CP it gives the following

20" wheels (£2000 option)
Louder exhaust but not the Akrapovic made MPE
Thicker anti roll bars
10mm lower springs
Firmer bushes (I think but that might have been an all round LCI update along with revised steering)
Tweaked dampers
15 hp more at the top end (below 6k the same as standard car IIRC)

Effectively the rest costs £4700.

I think it might be quite a good option (but dear) as the M5 does suffer from a few barge like handling issues.

Can't remember which of these were options vs standard, but:

- rear view camera - essential, use it all the time (live in city centre)
- M seats - yes for me, though only sat in the standards for 10 mins so it's not a fair comparison
- audio upgrade, usb in, ipod bits - all used all the time.
- 19 wheels. Work fine, look fine.
- split seats. Used once. Your lifestyle may vary.
- extra power sockets. Used infrequently.
- regular boot. The boot is spring loaded and has a release on the remote so you can press when approaching the car and the boot opens up. Pushing it closed is not a hardship.
- HUD. All cars should have this.
- remote access to a/c, pre-heat, unlock. IIRC there was some funny combo of audio / internet options that had to be specced for this to be included. Use it often in summer.

HUD is definitely standard. I thought this was a mere "nice to have" but its actually something you wouldn't want to be without - even with the dial, the big digital speedometer *and* the HUD projecting speed straight in front of your eyes, its easy to forget just how fast you're going when you're on it hard.

Before I forget the M performance carbon interior is stunning and makes the interior look very special, highly recommended + the black grills adds to the meanness of the front end.
