Make sure the rear subframe / floor has been repaired / reinforced. And join M3 cutters for lots of info.

I had E46 M3 and My tips would be:
-get manual car, I don't think smg is good at all. (E9x a bit better, but still for me a no go)
-get csl if you can (it is just better and will keep value!)
-get car with rod bearings done or have some money on the side for engine work.
-suspension makes the ride, get one with work done or be ready to do some.
These cars at just in that age now that they all need proper look everywhere or you will not experince the car how it was ment to be.

E46 M3 is still one of my favorite cars and one day I will get one again!

Oh.. And also I moved in to 997 2s after my e46 m3 and I love it!
If I have to pick my 997 or m3 I would have to say I take Porsche still any day.
Sure I would like have them both!
I would leave boxter out from the game.

They maybe cheap to buy now, but they are still fairly expensive to run.

Get the car you intend to buy professionally inspected (not the AA) before you buy it. If the owner won't let you. Walk away. Spending £250 on an inspection could save you a lot of money in the long run.

It's very hard to find a good one now. Budget for spending a fair bit putting things right after buying.

Be very careful if buying from a specialist trader.
