I had an auto M235i for a couple of years. I loved the engine and it was a nice car to drive on smoother roads but I wasn't a big fan of the suspension and chassis set-up and didn't particularly enjoy it on tighter B roads.

When I got a test drive in a DCT M2 I took it down the motorway and although I loved the looks and sound I was a little bit worried it was going to be too like the M235i. Then we hit the back roads and the thing just came to life. There is so much more grip and turn-in than the M235.

I ended up going for a manual with the M Performance exhaust. It'll be a long time before I get bored of it and it sounds great.

I haven’t driven one yet, but I did own an M235i for a bit which I really liked, I imagine it will be a much more polished version of that with the all important M x-factor, I want something bang up to date, new tech, classic BMW straight 6 noise (never been keen on the M4 engine noise, too synthetic for me) and fun to drive so think it should fill that brief very well. The 1M is a very special car so I would not expect it to live up to that - what a car that was, proper x-factor stuff and in black it looked reallly mean with its over the top aggressive stance. Chris Harris raves about the 1M and M2 so that’s good enough for me! Cheers...

Have you driven an M2?

Depends what you want from a car, but the 1M is much better in my view.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree re the M235i, fantastic car and awesome engine, but the suspension ran out of talent quite quickly and the ride wasn't great, in comparison the ride on my 1M Coupe felt much more sophisticated, properly sorted. I would imagine the M2 suspension will be way better than the M235i with the M2 feeling like it's had some proper development and fine tuning by the M team so it does handle and ride properly. I really need to go and drive one to see for myself. Appreciate all the feedback all.... cheers

Also I've had a small bit of feedback today from a main dealer which would be April 2018 delivery (to my spec) and a small discount. Will try another dealer for comparison and go from there and test drive one!

I'm probably late to the party here but I'm told BMW had announced a new M2 and other type models coming

Thanks for this, very useful. Seems some very big discounts to be had from pre-registered (latest LCI version cars) out there and hopefully enough choice of pre-reg cars to get a spec near to what I want. But I had no idea (been spending too much time on the Porsche forums!) new versions of the M2 are about to be announced - CS, CSL, etc and a possible engine change to the S55 unit (hopefully they make it sound nice!). My local dealer offered me minimum discount and no nod to the new cars coming out, so will take a step back and re-assess as I had not planned on getting the car until next Spring (just thought I may need to order now if waiting lists). Thanks all for your help and advice....

I spoke with a guy called Chris Hill at Bournemouth - is that the same guy, he didn’t seem that clued up with these forums, just wondering if I’ve got the wrong Chris! I previously bought my 1M and M235i through Kenny at Bournemouth but he left a while back - even with him I had to hold his feet to the fire to get a sensible discount!

Jason at PCB sets the bar so high on being straight forward and knowledgeable - makes it tough managing my own expectations when dealing with others.

Hi

Go local, speak to Chris (he’s on here), tell him I sent you.

PS have you decided on your GT3 colour yet?

Ah, yes you have! Chris Chambers-Clarke is who I was thinking of. Same mould as Jason, very knowledgable with all things BMW, especially M and Individual.

Last I heard, Kenny went to BMW UK......

I’ve just picked up a M2 manual. Criteria was modern daily driver that had a passively damped and capable chassis. Couldn’t find anything else that appealed. I learnt a long time ago that the thrill of BHP doesn’t last, you soon want more. The thrill of a decent chassis lasts much longer.

Will change the brake fluid and fit RS29’s just in case I track it.
