At the moment the M2 vs M3/M4 debate hinges on the production volumes. If the M2 gets a good write up and has limited volume then the people with deposits are quids in.

If it's not limited numbers then it'll depreciate like an M3&M4
And given their more special interior (seats) and higher power to weight ratio they seam a better proposition
So is the M2 special enough as a weekend car? Or is it a daily driver?

The reason previous M3s have poor depreciation figures is simply down to numbers produced. I can't find any numbers for the new M3/4 but here are some figures from BMWRegistry for older Ms

EC Spec RHD
E43 Coupe 12510
E43 Conv 7234

Total 19744 over 5 years (roughly 4000 per year)

E90 1904
E92 9518
E93 2741

Total 14163 over 6 years (roughly 2350 per year)

If we believe what we read and they make 400-500 M2s per year, it will be far more rare than previous M3s. I know there's a good chance they increase production but I can't see them undermining M3/M4 sales too much. I'm hoping my Man-Maths isn't too far wrong as I just put a deposit down for a 2017 slot. Unless they make a minger, I think it's a fairly safe proposition compared to the new crop of M cars that have got so far away from the original ethos.

Before anyone jumps out their pram, I'm not suggesting that the M2 won't be a million miles away from the E30 ethos, but will be relatively closer than an M3/M4....mainly due to size, weight and manual option. With regard to production numbers, just found this on autocar

"The M2 will be produced in much higher numbers than the 1 Series M Coupé. While just 450 1 M models made it to the UK, BMW plans to bring 2000 M2 units to the UK, with the only constraint being the number it is able to produce"

I think we are all hoping that this car is going to live up to it's on paper promise dynamically and hopefully the hype too. (I would imagine that any press reviews will precede anyone on here taking delivery).
If not, due to the considerable waiting times for delivery the large majority will have the option to have their deposits returned should they decide not to proceed.

With regard to production volumes, is the delay in delivery and limited availability not down to the fact that the car is being built at the Leipzig plant and they cannot physically build this vehicle to the production volumes of the M3/4 or even increase them?

They only have capacity on the 2 series line to produce between 13,800 and 14,000 M2's before the line is switched to the new 2 series.

Again, what is publically claimed is going to happen and what is the reality of people being able to get cars (even from this thread) says that 2000 is a very optimistic figure.

With almost 200 UK dealers that would be 10 cars per dealer allocation average, so say, 5 per year. Only the big dealers are getting anything close to that number allocation per year, with most seemingly getting no more than 2-3.

By production end, I would think we'll be looking at UK numbers around the 1000-1500 mark max.

This is the approach I'm taking, I have a refundable deposit with a dealer for delivery late 2016 so I'm waiting to see what the press reviews look like. If they are as good as the hype and early feedback from the Detroit show suggest then I'll wait for the M2 as it is ideal for me (it will be a daily driver/fun car) if not then I'll think about other options such as an M3, maybe an M4. The RS3 and AMG A45 don't float my boat at all.

A chance of a test drive ahead of making final deposit payments would be nice but I think that is unlikely to happen, I'm number two at my local dealer and they are only getting two cars for the whole of 2016.

Guess so.

"Frank van Meel, BMW M GmbH boss, indicated that the M2 has an extra wide body, hosting modified M3 underpinnings. Because of these specific components the M2 production requires more time compared to the standard 2-Series Coupé. In order to prevent the M2 slowing down the production line featuring all other models, BMW briefly removes the sports coupé from the other models. M division will convert cars at a separate workshop. This means numbers will be limited

I reckon numbers will be limited simply because building more would reduce the production of more profitable, bigger margin cars. Regardless, BMW are astute enough to appreciate the all round benefit that limited production runs can have on a brand....witness Porsche over the last 10 years and their sales performance...."Sorry, you can't get one of those, but why not try one of these in the meantime"

14000 M2s?
Yep.... that's the sort of maximum number than could be produced on the line in the time frame, but that's worldwide total, not UK only numbers.

Remember, we 'only' got 450 UK 1M's, from a total production run of around 6300.

I think it was Dec 2017 as the rumoured end of M2 production date.

Thanks aeropilot for clarifying - yes, i meant 14,000 M2 production slots in total, the best indication i can get is that the UK will get at least 1000 of those (500 in 2016, 500+ in 2017).

Isn't there also an element of having to limit the average fleet emissions, ie to produce one M2, they probably have to build 3 118d's to keep the average below 130g CO2?

Had my build date of December re confirmed last night.

I decided to dig out the figures and answer my own question; M2 185g CO2, 118i 116g C02.

So by my reckoning, to come out at 130g average, they need to build 4 118is for each M2.

As opposed to end of 2 series production?

Edited: Just read your post more closely. Does that mean that the current 2 series coupe production will be ending as soon as 2017, when it was only introduced in 2014?

So supposedly im second on the list at my local BMW dealership, put down a deposit in October and have been patiently waiting since. To be honest its in my interest to wait patiently because ideally i would like to see some reviews before i fully commit, if not no problem but that would be the ideal scenario.

Dealer emailed me end of last week saying 1st slot has been confirmed for delivery in June but they are struggling to get a second build slot, now i call bull s*** because looking over the forums dealers are getting 2 cars with 1 normally around June/July and the second towards the end of the year.

Thoughts? Im yet to speak with the dealer yet but waiting on a call back, he also didn't reply to my email last week to confirm i was still second in line ...

The timing of the 2 cars sounds about right as that's exactly what I have been told. I wouldn't be at all surprised though if dealers have hedged their bets and take more deposits than the slots they will be getting in anticipation of some dropping out. If no one drops out, they either give the deposit back or push them into a later build slot. I don't think there will be many dropouts. The M235i is such a good car that the chances of the M2 being a dog are quite slim IMO.
