Afternoon,

M135i 3dr went 2 weeks ago and we have a New Evoque on order for October (Baby on the way, so Mrs wanted something more practical). M135i was my daily, but the Evoque will become her daily - so we're going to chop in her new Mini and get something more exciting for me!!!

Always loved the Z4M in both Roadster and Coupe, however I am confused with the prices of them. Back when I had my S2000 a few years ago Im sure the Z4M Roadster got right down to 10-11k for a higher mileage car - therefore as I havent looked at them in the classifieds for a couple years I was expecting to see nice cars for 10-11k! However you dont get any change from 14-15k for a nice one now....

Is this me getting my numbers wrong, or have the values firmed up and are slowly creeping up??

Plus what are they like? I drove a Z4 3.0i previously and wasnt blown away - I assume the M is a different beast? Im assuming the straight line performance is nigh on identical to the M135i, but the engine is more like the S2000 from a few years back?

Cheers.

Pricing on the up, and with the weather as is, it'll stay like that for a while. You're right, a few years ago, £12k would get you a 60+ k model, now it's £14k. I'd look to spend £15-16k to get a good all rounder.

The car is totally different to a 3.0Si, so don't go off on previous experience. get out there and drive one, you'll be getting your money out before you've finished the test drive.

The M135 is turbo, the Z4M is N/A, power delivery will be different.

The M135i is a brilliant car, it just depends what you expect out of it. As a daily drive to work with a bootful of performance when you want - its cracking. If you want something exciting and are used to full fat M cars - its disappointing.

But, this isn't my issue. I am sure I will fall in love with the Z4M, its more about not paying over the odds for one, when there could be a better option at that price.

I think Bangle's design has aged well, and after the initial outcry of how they looked, people have realised they are good cars and prices are remaining strong.

Curve ball might be to try the Alpina roadster...

Well I suppose your other options at that price would be a 987 Boxster or SLK55 AMG. All very different and very good cars, totally depends on your personal preferences!

p.s. is an Evoque really going to be more practical than an M135i? They're not that big at all...

No wink - I think the Evoque has less load space?

Yea the evoque has bags more room. The main thing is the 3dr/5dr, cabin is bigger, boot is bigger (plus shape is much better). Don't think I didn't check it....

987 Boxster isn't an option as I don't want one. SLK55 is an option and I love the idea of the V8, however it looks a bit soft and I bet the M is much more fun to drive. I'll have a look at one when I'm looking to buy...

I went from a S2000 to a Z4M almost two years ago. Prices of the Z4M have increased, but have you seen the price of a low mileage S2000 of a similar age, increased by at least £2k since I sold mine.

Both cars have their positives and negatives...... I do miss the S2000 though after owning each, it would be a tough choice between the two, but if daily then Z4M wins and feels more special more of the time. However on the right road on the right night, the S2000 edges it in the smiles dept. One thing is obvious, both need modified (suspension and noise) to enjoy them fully.

Yes I loved the S2000 and frankly wish I hung onto it for another 12months, as I could have sold it for a profit!

The S2000 is great, but having been back in one after driving the M135i for 25k miles I can't say I was blown away. I felt like I was sat on top of the car as opposed to in it ( a common complaint I didn't recognise during ownership), and whilst the engine and tranny is brilliant it just felt too weedy. So that's where the Z4M comes in, just the right amount of performance I'm looking for, but with a specialness the M135i could only dream of having....

Should have bought the Z4M when I bought the S2000 in the perfect world.

Agree with you on the seating position... but I fitted the Backyard lowered seat rails which transformed things. At first you'll think you sit too low in the Z4M because of the high dash and raised bonnet, you never saw the bonnet in the S2000 as it sharply sloped away. Very similar cars, but also very different.

I have noticed how they are climbing in value and I paid £14500 at a dealer for a Roadster 2006 with 38k miles on it back in august 2012 and at the time they seemed to be going down in value quite quickly but its good for the owners that they are appreciating now.

I often wish I had kept mine now the sun is beaming!

Totally and utterly different to a Z4 3.0i - which I had before my M. Sold the 3.0i after 6 months as it was so anodyne, whereas the M feels so special, all the time. It feels intoxicating to drive, and is totally addictive. You really won't be disappointed... For what it's worth, I paid £16750 for mine last October as an AUC from Sytner with 30,000 miles.

The Z4M feels like a really special car - you sit way back towards the rear axle with that long bonnet stretching out in front and that peach of a straight 6 screaming towards the redline. They really are a great enthusiasts' car. But...

As a newish Dad myself (with a 10 month old), I'm pleased that my "fun" car can hold all three of us as well as a buggy and some luggage. Different strokes for different folks, naturally, but I wouldn't be getting anything like the use and enjoyment i'm getting out of my 1M if it only had two seats and a tiny boot. We're currently in France on a 2-week holiday in it, rather than taking Mrs G's 5 series... it's cosy but manageable.

So, by way of an uninvited (and potentially wide of the mark) "word of advice", I'd just say you might find you kick yourself for not buying something you can all enjoy together.

To that end, an e46 M3 CS would be worth a look for roughly the same money as a Z4MC. Not quite as exciting, but still ace and much more family friendly.

yup this is really well put tbh...

Sadly a really clean low mile, low owner z4m is now expensive enough to put me off, easily 18k plus... a 50k+ examples are around the 14k mark, ad i think these are going to keep increasing in value slowly but surely, absolutely ACE cars! i won't be without mine!

How about a 996? I've just bought one to keep the Z company and I can get 2 kids in the back... Not as frantic or as quick as the Z, but very special for different reasons...

I went from having an E46 M3 and a Z4M Roadster, via a 330i Touring (dull) to an M135i. The M135i is better than the 330, but like you say, it's a let-down after owning a few M-cars.

I have really fond memories of the Z4MR. The exhaust was always audible, the engine always willing and it urged me to scream it at every opportunity. I loved the thing and was really sorry to see it go, but the wife was really uncomfortable with having a new-born in it.

This.

We looked at an Evoque a while back but the boot is very small with no prospect of getting the "travel system" in the back...

Disco Sport a better bet?

Re the Z4M, maybe wait until October when prices may soften as the seasons change?

Not this.

We looked at an Evoque and bought one. Boot whilst not massive is plenty big enough, swallows up our Travel system with plenty space to spare! In the M135i we had to remove the wheels from the chassis, take out the parcel shelf and it could just about get in - with space for several fag papers.

Also with the baby seat in the back of the M135i the front seats had to be pretty much as far forward as they could, which is a no go. In the evoque the front seats are in a good position with the baby seat in the back...

Im sure the 3 of us will be just fine in the evoque on days out, I see people in much smaller cars with babies...

Disco Sport - Dont need 7 seats, didnt drive as nice as the Evoque, interior low rent compared to Evoque, dont like it from the back.

Im in no rush to get the new car, more than happy to buy in the winter to save a bit of dosh. Will keep looking for now, maybe test drive a few models and then start my search for the right one.

996 - Im not a massive fan of the 996 in general, although I do love the 4S with the strip light across the back and the T front bumper. But its 20k for a good one...if I was looking to spend 20k+ I would be looking at all sorts of stuff.

You must have the Evoque XL wink - The wife wanted one but we tried and it was just tiny inside given the vehicle size, hence going X5 instead.

Agree with the Pork 2nd car option - just done that myself biggrin
