I think in which case I know what you mean.

I travel home and there's one junction (T again) that regardless of how gently I try and accelerate onto the new road the car just won't get going for a few seconds, the lights are on and then..............wwwwwhhhhhoooooossssshhhhhhh.

Possibly simply down to a lot of grunt and running 'normal' tyres rather than say Cups?
That's the issue, but at other times on the same journey it will grip with a lot more power applied, I think it's something to do with steering wheel position and its relationship with the DSC.

Still strikes me as odd given i'm not suffering with the traction problems i hear others make reference to.

Naturally being RWD it's rarely perfect & even in hot/dry conditions i got the occasional squirm & sometimes when not expected, but it rarely hampers progress & modulating the throttle a little gets near perfect launches 9/10 times. My issue tends to be at higher speeds when encountering an unexpected tank slapper.

I find the DSC way too sensitive, I drive in MDM most of the time. You have to be very careful in the wet but to me it makes the car a lot more driveable. I'm no driving God so when it's very wet DSC is always on.

I've also found sport setting helps with the throttle not being as ferocious (if that makes sense!)

I tend to find myself without power on a launch when I smash into the limiter! As you guys will have no doubt realised you get a somewhat less than elegant upshift if you're in manual mode and don't change when you're supposed to...

I blame the polarised sunglasses blocking the HUD.

I use Auto 99% of the time so get caught out every time i switch to manual & the Limiter becomes my bouncing ball.

Only last week some end of bell in a white Transit decided he was going to take 1 side & a bit of the fast sweeping country lane i was on so i popped it into Manual, stamped on the horn to move him across & then buried the loud pedal, only to make not great progress as i was boinging off the limiterfrown

I'm glad I'm not the only one to fk it up on occasion!

Interesting that you use auto most of the time as I always find myself overriding and shifting manually thereafter - which of the three settings do you use and when?

It's easy to mess up, but when it goes right, it's just so damn satisfying! Also, the noise just gets better and better with age (of the car!)

I've got a daily routine going now: (1) switch off Start/Stop (2) use manual (set to quickest shift setting) until car is fully warmed up (3) use Auto at slowest shift setting in commuting gridlock, occasionally knocking it into manual (and back into Auto) when it tries to default to 2nd gear (4) otherwise use manual except when cruising on motorway (5) use MDM to de-stress after exiting traffic jam on the way home. The M5 is a car and a half.

At the risk of being completely off topic, how much do you find winter tyres limit the driving experience on the days when it isn't really greasy? And how much help do you get when it is icy, snowy or even just wet?

I'm trying to work out if I should buy four wheels and tyres or just stay with the standard tyres and keep the car at home when it gets really icy or snows (about ten days a year where I now live).

In general I find the ride much softer and the pot holes are soaked up easier!

On a wet cold day with winters the grip is significantly better, you can drive at speed in pouring rain in full confidence that you are unlikely to aquaplane.

Once the weather dries out the grip is lost and if you press on you can see the traction light from stand still to well over 100 leptons (tested on a track obviously!). The ride can be for sake of a better word - mushy and wobbly compared to normal 20" wheels and I notice a fair difference when I change back.

On balance I'm happy with winters from October through to March. I've not had chance to test in snow yet but I'm sure if nothing else I'll get down my drive and onto the main road which I could never do in my 535D wink

Are they worth the money?

In my view yes, on that slippy day when you need them they might just save your life.

Hopefully I'll never see that day.

Thanks! All makes sense but I think it will depends on the cost so I'm going to start some shopping around. Which rims did you go for and with which tyres? Did you go to a BMW dealer?

I bought BMW 19" M5 wheels fitted with Pirelli Sotto tyres £2500 all in with a £300 discount from my supplying dealer.

I've had two winters (approx 10000 miles) and I need new tyres for this year I suspect.

Most of my journeys are long schleps from West Lancashire to Suffolk so all Motorway & Dual Carriageway so for those i have the car in all the softest settings & stay in Auto. I've set M1 to all the hardest settings but still in Auto (level 3), the M HUD & with TC fully on so when i want to play i can just press the 1 button & it's game on. For track i have M2 set as above but in Manual (level 3) & with MDM selected.

This is why now whenever i swap to manual manually (if that makes sense) it's not long before i've forgotten & i either hit the limiter (doesn't happen often) or the car shifts itself when slowing down so i end up reverting back to Auto.

Oddly enough when i had me E60 M5 i 'only' every drove that in manual as the auto was horrific so never go used. I may make a concerted effort to use manual more as the noise is far better & more of a giggle in stop/start traffic.

Hi Guys, had my running service no issues apart from the brakes squeeking ok every journey!!! As soon as they get hot they squeak every time I brake so annoying. BMW said they took them off cleaned them and re greased them apparently. Which hasn't made any difference. They said this is the guidance from BMW as the first stage. If still only done just over 1400 miles. Is there a defect with the brakes? I've never had squeeking on new brakes on any of my cars or any of my M cars.

Should I push for new brakes from them? Getting even a phone back from Sytner BMW is hassle in itself.

There is a service information bulletin on M5/M6 squealing brakes in the USA, SIB 34 06 14, something about balance weights on the pads.

Thanks would this apply to the UK models? Are they all made in Germany? How do I bring this to the attention of my dealer?

I'm going to reference that when the car goes on next week for the storm damage repair.

They tried to fob me off and say that they are best brakes around etc and they are performance brakes and they will squeek! Wth! Never heard so much BS in my life. Never have I is squeeking from any of my M cars!!

Mine squealed badly with just a few thousand miles on the car but have since stopped - I think a few hard near-stops from speed did the trick.

No squeaks whatsoever on mine and 22000 miles in.

Still on my European road trip, Christ it's a bloody brilliant machine cloud9
