Just a quick word of warning and a bit of advice sought.

My 128K E46 M3 has spun it's rod bearing on cylinder number 5. I bought it because it had immaculate service history but this was obviously not enough. As far as I can tell it had never been tracked and there was no prior warning.

By the time I realised what was going on the damage had been done and the crank was scored. The other 5 shells were also very worn.

Looking in the oil filter there are flakes of copper, this could be used as an early warning so the shells could be changed before the crank is damaged. On the american forums they analyse the used oil for copper but I've never seen it done here.

I'll be looking to sell the car as it is, any ideas on the best way? I've put it back together so it runs but with an obvious knock.

your engine did very very well to get to 128k so the car has probably been looked after... The road bearing is seen as a maintenance item as far as the s54 is concerned, we track the oil analysis and look for elevated lead readings, if copper reading occur things are about already in st street most likely. The oil checks won't show anything unless you doing readings over a prolonged time which will then start to show trends and patterns for your particular engine. this may be overkill but i will be changing the rod bearings on my vehicle every 40k or so miles due to it being supercharged and me not knowing what effect or if this is indeed accelerating wear on the bearings, my engine does see track use and regular high revs in such situations, service history is impeccable. Sorry to hear about the drama OP , have you considered a second hand motor and selling running? selling as is will probably cost you more than you think....
