My whole life MPG when I sold the F10 M5 was just shy of 24mpg & on my regular 250mile jaunt I could nudge 30mpg (never quite saw 30 though).

That whole life included many 80-85mph motorway jaunts with a few back road blats & many track days, so all told a decent enough average.

Is there a buying guide for F10 M5's ?

I'm looking at earlier Lci examples around 30k miles from the main dealerships and would be looking to get an other years warranty as part of the deal but still want to arm myself with the right information when I view the potential buy.

Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

Am not sure there are many issues with the F10.

Just be weary of the obvious, such as get brakes inspected and maybe measured to make sure they have plenty of life and its had its running in service which if its an AUC car it will have been done.... Try and get MPSS tyres on with plenty of life etc as it all adds up if they will need changing anytime soon

Now I'm not in the market any more I might open up my little market scraping app to the M5 buyers of PH. It emails you the BMW AUC market every day, with a summary of changes and a note of how long each car has been for sale. It's not perfect but it gave me a good idea of when to start calling about cars (eg when they reduce them in price!)

Send me a message if you want your email adding to the bcc list, then it'll take me a day or so to update the code to send to other people rather than just me smile.

Actual buying tips... I decided the options I absolutely wanted then started filtering out cars based on that. I didn't think I was being fussy; I just wanted an LCI with at least the HK stereo, folding seats and ski bag. It was surprising how few cars that left me with in my budget!

If buying an AUC car you shouldn't have too many worries other than consumables as in the previous post. Tyres and brakes are pricey so try to buy a car that's had both done recently, or haggle with the costs in mind.

I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread but another good point to haggle on is warranty. The renewal cost to you, when the 1 year AUC warranty expires and when the car is under 60,000 miles, is something like £1200 for a year. It costs BMW about £500. So you can pitch it as it being worth more to you than a grand off the car but it only 'costs' the salesman £500... Worked for me anyway.

Fantastic! Really chuffed you're enjoying it. Don't worry, you'll get used to the 'pulling away gently' issue... it's all down to recalibrating your brain to a car that has THAT MUCH torque from almost zero revs.

One top tip is to use the 'tap mode' in crawling traffic. Rather than putting your foot on the accelerator to ease forward, just gently tap it and lift immediately off. The car then moves forward in a gentle and controlled crawl. Ideal for stop-start traffic or any careful manoeuvring you have to do.
Yeah, I got used to pulling away fairly soon after starting driving it. It just takes a bit more finesse than my old M3 which is what I'd been driving most recently.

As I was driving it in London I noticed it'd creep sometimes but not others. "Weird", thinks I. Reading the handbook in bed later I found the 'tap' trick! smile

Collected a new FFRR Autobiography on the 1st March. Very different to the F10 M5 but so far really enjoying it. Took some getting used to the gadgets as is the first JLR car I've ever owned.

It's just something I wrote to scrape the data off the BMW AUC website, store it in a database then generate emails a couple of times a day with the changes since it last ran. It's hard-coded for M5s right now, so I don't have any data on other models, but could be changed / expanded to look at other cars without too much effort.

I did toy with the idea of polishing the app up and selling it somewhere; based on the number of emails I've had since my last post it seems there'd be a demand! However, Jaunt, the library I'm using for the real bulk of the data extraction work, is a commercial product and if I were to re-do the HTML parsing myself, so I could then sell my own code instead, it would be a lot more work than I want to take on really. I don't have the time.

I did build a front-end for Windows to allow me to filter cars by options but I got a bit bored and didn't finish it. And, yes, other ideas included a cloud-based database that every user of the app has access to, an iOS version, more analytics of the data...

If you're interested in the technical details, it's written in Java and uses Jaunt to do the HTML parsing, H2 as the database and JavaMail for the email parts. A couple of days poking around the source code for the BMW website and it was easy enough to figure out their various internal identifiers for car models, how to submit the search requests etc... Once I was happy enough with it, I stuck it on a RasperryPi I had lying around and now it runs in a drawer at home.

Anyway, it was a bit of fun but I don't think I'll develop it any further I'm afraid. Sorry!

Anyone who's mailed me today should get the update email around 10.30am and 10.30pm tomorrow. I randomise the run time and how long it takes to run, so the timing of the email varies by a few minutes.

I'm afraid I won't be updating it to cover other BMW models, as some have requested.

Is CP M5 really worth that extra £5K+ ?

Roughly similar mileage of M5 and M5 CP are £5k apart.

Another thing I have noticed is that most of the base spec cars even with under 20K miles have at least 2 owners some even have 3, does that put anyone off buying such car ?

These and similar cars are bought on a whim usually /an itch to scratch and in general you will see higher than normal number of owners.
Another reason might be they are in the game of wanting to try other cars whilst others might not be able to accept the real life running costs they see.

You know these cars will all be driven hard why else buy one

This. I set out to look for a single owner car and struggled. I think it's mostly the fact that people buying cars of this type do it on a whim and flip them a few months later when they get bored.

Yes - the competition pack has a sports exhaust.

I set out to find a CP based on the reviews, but struggled. The only one that looked close was £1.5k more than the car I bought, but with 20,000 miles more. In the end, I decided it wasn't necessary to have it. Now that I am living with the car I think that is right. It is already utterly bonkers.

Defining whether it is 'worth' 5k extra is too subjective. It is to me but may not be to you. What I can say is that the CP car just feels more 'right' than the standard car. The suspension is tighter but better damped, the steering is more direct and it has the sports exhaust. I owned a standard car for a year and now have a CP version.

I set out for a comp pack M5, ended up paying a fair bit more than I really wanted to spend, but it's well worth it for me, the car is an animal & does things a 2 tonne saloon has no right to. I'm sure a std M5 is 99% as good, but if you want a CP, hunt the right car down & you won't be disappointed!

The other side to the argument is that you will pay more for a CP car, but it will always command a premium over a std car.

All personal and I decided I wanted a CP car. Just felt tighter and sounded more growly to me.

The must haves for me were. .. CP, HK, Surround view & Comfort seats.

Finally picked up an AUC M5 CP , absolutely gorgeous one owner Moonstone metallic with Sakhir Orange with all my must haves. I love the combo and adore the Moonstone paint, stunning colour imho. Discovered after purchasing it, that it also has the M Performance titanium exhaust system (made by Akropovic) with the carbon fibre tips. Well chuffed! Looks and sounds the part. cool
