I’ve had my F10 M5 for just over 3 years now and rapidly approaching 70,000 miles.

To summarise it’s the best car I’ve owned and lived with as a daily drive.

My “normal” commute is an 80 mile round-trip down the M1 (plagued with seemingly endless road works) mixed with odd trips up and down the length of the country and the occasional blast into Europe.

Only had 1 niggle which was a faulty vanos solenoid at around 30,000 miles but other than that absolutely no problems.

Average MPG mid-20s (mainly motorway).

Tyre wear is light but I’m more of a high-speed cruiser than a track-day enthusiast (still on 2nd set of tyres from new – Michelin Pilot SS all round – due for replacement at end of year).

Brake wear again VERY light as above (only had rear pads replaced since new).

Servicing has all been covered by BMW service plan so no issues there.

Always fuelled with Shell V-Power Nitro+.

Consistently uses a litre of oil every 3000-4000 miles.

Currently running Mondial extended warranty (£104 pm including European breakdown cover).

Next I’m going down the M4 route (delivery mid-September) as I come from an M3 background and loved a recent test drive so figured it’s time for a change.

A word of warning though…

Having owned a couple M-cars now it depends massively on how you drive them as to how much the running costs will be. I live on the motorway with 95% of my journeys taking place there. My cars always run up to temperature, run at high-speeds over long distances with minimum braking so unless you’re in the same situation I’d half some of these figures!

I'm 20 months in at 43K miles and use it in a different way to the above. Resulting in new discs and I think two sets of pads. From memory I've had bills for these for around £3K. My tyres don't last that long either!

I must be very lucky as although probably 70% of my usage is long motorway/dual carriageway schleps, the balance is fast road/track/hoon to & from said tracks in Europe. I've consumed no oil (had 1st proper oil change last week at 15K miles), 1 set of front tyres & 1 set of rear pads. Rear tyres have 5mm across them & fronts 6mm across them whilst the front pads have about another 5k left in them.

Rear pads are used by the T/C which is why track work & fast road batters the rears & of course being a heavy car the weight takes is toll on the shoulders of the front tyres. I'm somewhat amazed the rear tyres & front pads are in such good shape but can't complain.

Discovered an awesome feature of the DCT gearbox... When in 'manual' mode and cruising but wanting to do an overtake or get a sudden burst of acceleration... Push the accelerator flat to the floor and shift down. The gearbox selects the most powerful gear available and pins you back in your seat with a smile on your face while the cabin is filled with the m-sport symphony.....
Give it a go!

My post above appears to have quoted & then added what i wrote at the same time so i'm not the one who's done 40k in 20 months. My car is at 16k miles after 14 months.

You make a good point. I may become a tad more adventurous with my settings rather than stick with normal & switch to M1/M2 when the mood takes me.
My town settings are Sport steering/Sport suspension/engine efficient. All other driving Sport suspension/Sport steering and Sport + Engine.

It's proper bonkers. Spotted mention of this feature a few months ago on a different Forum & have given it a few go's with comedic results.

Just be careful how/where/when you deploy this feature as the rears will likely light up for fun.

Does it make a difference what setting you have it on?

I don't think it matters what the other setting are, that said if you've selected MDM or TC off then the outcome would likely be different.

Basically hold the left paddle & bury the throttle past the resistance point. The reason it can be a bit of an eye opener is depending on your speed at the time you could theoretically drop from 7th to 2nd.

All great info folks cheers, does anyone know how to get the thwack from second to third all the time?
Mine (cp exhaust) only does it occasionally, full throttle sometimes then randomly other times.
Childish I know but love it when it happens.

Is that 'thwack' a noise or a jolt? If noise then i've no answer as my car (non CP) does it whenever it feels like it but certainly not every time & i've a feeling it's more noticeable when throttle is set to Sports Plus. If jolt then you need the transmission setting on 3 & ideally in paddle mode to get the kick in the back.

Sorry thwack maybe not the best term, more like a bang! Happens randomly as above and almost sounds like a gunshot!

I tried this in D-mode, cruising in sixth at 40mph, with everything set to sport plus, shift 3 and DSC off.....fk me, what a jolt and what a laugh....the rears just light up ....slither, slither.....oomf!

Big word of warning though.....mine was a right handful, so you should only really try this on private runways with lots of space around you.

I love this childish thread....brilliant stuff!
