Hi all,

I have just noticed what looks to excessive wear on my drivers bolster. I have took my car down to the local dealer who have told me this is just wear and tear, the car has only done 1670 miles and I am always careful when entering and exiting the car. I will post some pics up soon of the 'wear'. Has anyone else had similar issues. The car is an F80 M3 wil silverstone leather

1,670 miles, wear on the leather? That is insane! Unless you're wearing scouring pads for trousers of course. My M3 left me with 77k and only the mildest of marks on the bolster.

Easy done with the wrong trousers. Buttons, zips, even heavy seams can cause damage that will soon result in 'excessive wear'.

Hard to see what sort of manufacturing defect could cause such a thing, but I'll stand to be corrected.

It doesn't look as bad in the pictures, the car is to go back to the dealer tomorrow to allow them to perform additional checks.

I wouldn't accept that. 1600 miles! It sounds like you are far too pleasant. Unfortunately others can mistake that for weakness. My usual 'way' is to start off as a nice guy but the moment i get any push back i'd go nuclear. The leather is st if it's failed already. It should be able to withstand abrasion irrespective of its proud position.

I would tell them that they can do all the checks they want but you will not be accepted anything other than a new seat

The coating they apply now does seem a little weak compared to the good old days! If your careful and it's still worn like that I agree you should go in more aggressive and sit there till they sort it, their just being lazy as no money will go their way for the work or at least very little.

Nice colour BTW.

Knowing a bit about leather, clearly it's st. A quality Aneline would last 10 years.

The car went back to the dealers today and a new seat cover was fitted to the lower Part of the seat. It seems a bit looser than the previous one but I have been assured it will tighten up over the next few days

A piece of leather will 'tighten up' on it's own? Doesn't work like that with most leather I've seen..
Unless you soak it, maybe..

Good luck!

Hi OP

It won't tighten up - it might begin to fit better as your ass weight pulls it tighter onto the bolsters but then you will be left with a slack or looser fitting base.

Normally they are pulled tight using hog rings from the underside.

As a side note - for a colour like yours then you will always be prone to it showing marks, dye transfer etc. I can highly recommend having some of this applied. I had it applied on a car when it was detailed by www.offyourmarks.com

It was Gtechniq L1 leather guard and is ace imho

The leather in current BMWs is absolutely bloody terrible. Doesnt surprise me one bit. The leather in my 2014 3er looks like it's had 5 hard years.

The leather in mine is superb more than a match for the leather in my old 911, making both of a very high standard.

Current generation?

Blimey. I assumed it was simply poor quality product, but maybe mine is defective!

State of play after 10000 miles and approx 8 months in my M6. I clean/treat the leather every week with BMWs leather cleaner as well because the same happened on my M5 which also had silverstone. Thought it was just my fat ass getting in and out, can I partly blame the quality of the leather as well!!!

Also note that unless kept clean regularly silverstone on the arm rest on the central tunnel can get badly stained by dark coloured long arm sleeved shirts/jackets when your arm is resting on it which is then difficult to shift if you leave it too long.

Unless the leather is specific to M cars, I think that is down almost entirely to the quality of the leather. I think it's extremely poor - thin, overly soft and very easy to wear away in normal use.
