Unquestionably important to get winter tyres as more than anything it allows you to enjoy the car without treading gingerly from November through to March. I've tried to run BMWs without them and now wouldn't consider being without them - particularly as I live in a rural area. I have a Z4M and couldn't easily find appropriate winter tyres so I've just bought a manual E61 530i touring for the winter months and the first thing I've done is buy it a set of winter wheels and tyres.

Couldn't agree more. Takes the worry away driving on snow, until someone slithering on summer tyres gets close.

Got some now (thanks Jamie) so will see if my opinion on them being a must have changes over this Winter. I still doubt this will be the case but you never knowsmile

Due to unforeseen circumstances I am having to sell my car or park it up for a while. As a result I have a brand new set of winter wheels which I have protected with a coating of poorboy's wheel wax but haven't been anywhere near a car yet. They are 18" Original BMW M3/M4 wheels to suit current models. The style is M513 which I don't think they sell in this country but are genuine as my dealer has confirmed apparently they are standard in America. The colour is Ferric Grey and they have sensors for tyre pressure monitoring (RDC). There are two 9jx18 ET29 and two 10jx18 ET40. The BMW part numbers are 2284750 and 2284751. The tyres are Pirelli Sottozero Winter 240 so a good set up. Please note there are no centre caps. If anyone needs any more information or photos let me know and for the right price I am happy to deliver.

Are you wheels suitable for a 335d xdrive touring with Msport Brakes? If so, can you send me some pics with a price please.
Many thanks.

Hi I'm not sure I can't see why not but they are pretty wide same as the standard width on the M3. It says I can't send you a private message. Let me know if you still want pics perhaps you can send me a message? The tyres are worth between £150-200 and the alloys over £600 each. They are all 'weighted' and ready to go straight on at what is a very good price particularly for winter safety

3k for a set of wheels & tyres? I'd be going straight to an alloy wheel centre get some nice alloys, safe in the knowledge that I've saved a 1k+ most decent alloys come with an anti crack/buckle warranty. Vossen Stance Vertini all do this.

I think the extra cost of the OEM ones outweighs the risk of problems, necessity to inform your insurer and (now) I presume the car complains if TPMS sensors aren't present?

I agree but the sensors are £100 for 4 and can be fitted to most non oe wheels. But the most cost effective solution is to buy second hand oe wheels as they depreciate by 50% instantly. I just bought some nearly new 381s in 17 for £200 and bought new Nokian D4s. Total budget with sensors £650 fitted. BMW charge £1,500.
Also, I wish people stopped repeating that 7 degree thing, the threshold is far lower.

How much lower?

Now i've decided to acquire some Winter Tyres (Michelin Alpin), i'm keen to know when i should be looking to swap over?

Paul, compared to reasonably fresh Supersport, the threshold for me is about 1 or 2 degrees. I'll monitor the weather and will put the wheels on accordingly. Usually some time between mid-November and early December but I didn't fit them at all last year, being on the South Coast and not having had a winter at all then !

I'd agree with that - in my experience they feel beneficial in the wet from about 4-5C and in the dry closer to freezing. The moment there's any real risk of ice/snow/slush they are significantly better. I've had them on every car I've owned in the last 6 years - 5 sets in total. And yes, I'm usually the mug who pays dealer prices for the wheelset and then flogs the car 18 months later.

Thanks. I've not spent on spare wheels, just a set of Winter Tyres, so not in a position to keep swapping them round. I'll therefore be looking for when the average temps are going to drop to low single figures & will then keep the Winter's on until the opposite happens.

Would swapping when the overnight temps start falling below say 2-3 degrees (most of my longer journeys start at around 4:30am) & then swapping back to the MPSS around March/April when the temps rise be about right?

Seems about right mate - thought of you this weekend (no, not like that) as I had my first day at Spa on Sunday. I won't tell you what time the M135i seems to be achieving as you might not believe me. When are you back there ? I should be back next spring.

Hoping to do Zolder in the Spring & Spa (2 dayer) again whenever Circuit Days choose which hopefully will be back to normal at late September.

I reckon a well driven M135i in the dry & on suitable rubber should manage low 3mins. Had a few in both 1 Series & 2 Series guise last week including a couple of RSR's cars & most seemed to be putting in reasonable laps from what i could tell. That said & may have been more about timing than my pace, but i passed all i encountered & none came past me other than on out or cool down laps.

do people generally stick to the same size rim on a BMW for winter wheels?

got a 335x drive on 19s..

and have an M2 coming to replace it in April on 19s too

probably going for a package on Wheelbase- but 19 winters seem harder to source.

so was wondering about 18s.. on the 335 it would look ok, but the m2 im wondering if that would look pants?

If you're running 19s, most people drop to 18s. That's also what BMW supply for M3/4 cars. I drop to 18s for winter. I was worried they would look a little lost in the well, being used to 19s but they look OK I think.

My M5 has the OEM 19's & i've opted to use the same wheels so my Winters will stay as 19's, however the tyre width will drop by 10mm against the MPSS as the Alpin are 285 for the rears & 255 for the fronts.

I've always run 1" smaller on winters as that's usually what bmw.de shows as the approved winter fitment.

E46 (several) - 18's to 17's
E87 130i - 18's to 17's
E91 330i - 18's to 17's
E92 M3 - 19's to 18's
F11 535i - 19's to 18's

You get the picture.
