OK, call it usable real world range then as in the point you would refill the tank, BMW advises strongly against running M cars low on fuel so it's always advisable to not run them on fumes.

Could be my usage profile but I always seem to get around 20% less than the official combined cycle on the petrol cars I've had, others will have different experiences.

All fair enough but if we say that for comfort you'd always fill-up with at least a gallon remaining in the tank that means an M4 has just over 12 gallons of "usable" capacity; therefore, if people are only getting 220 miles from those 12 and a bit gallons that equates to roughly 18mpg. The M4 DCT has a combined figure of 34 so if 18 is a genuine real world figure that's not 20% off the combined figure, it's closer to 50%! I'm not saying for one minute that the people quoting those sort of ranges are lying (why would they?) but I do think an average of 18mpg from a M4 DCT must reflect either lots of stop-start traffic/short runs and/or a seriously heavy right foot.....

My profile is 80% motorway 20% country/urban hence I get 23mpg from my M5 or 20% less than the combined, but it all depends on how you personally drive, when you drive and where you drive. smile

Indeed so but to be almost 50% off the combined figure - and 28% off the urban figure - suggests a pattern of usage that's likely to be rather different from the OP's mileage profile and "relaxed" driving style! smile

Yeah, it is mixed driving, as I said before I reckon it's about 17 in that mode.

Thanks for the info guys. Filling up at the quarter tank will mean a slightly reduced range but I think at worst it would be 4.5/5 fill ups a month. I think a budget of around £350 a month fuel would be sensible. Hopefully it would be less (original budgeted £250) but that means I can drive without worrying about mpg and would take into account small rise in fuel prices/unexpected heavy traffic/some spirited driving.

How far off is the TC reading compared to real life usage? I find the VW is approx. 94% accurate

I checked this morning and have averaged just over 22mpg in the first 3900 miles of my ownership
Weekly drive is 120 miles motorway (Mon am, tragic M25 grind/Fri pm M25 blast) and 5 miles Mon-Fri town drive. Weekends are 50 miles mixed. Every now and again I have a proper blatt. Everything turned up and windows down really does burn 97ron...
I had a very similar pattern of use in my E92 M3 with a very similar result! In fact with increasing miles I got up to about 25mpg with that sort of use.

Lies, damned lies and official fuel consumption figures...

I am only driving it on 50 mile Sunday morning blats now and the number is back down to 21.9

You should to give that car to someone who's going to use it Tony...

I must try harder as mine's better than that in my M5, although probably a greater motorway mix in my regular driving.

After 4500 miles, the trip computer is stating that I'm averaging 26mpg, that is with mixed driving and the odd blast.

Maybe a manual is more efficient !?

Nooooooo....nobody else is getting my baby....

I really really appreciate how good this car is, after I have had 4 days in a Mokka/Cactus/Captur/Astra and other such rental car favourites

Don't say that - I put 78l in mine the other day hehe

I tend to plan my fuel stops meticulously based on a very select choice of VPower dispensing outlets which are aligned with my usual travels and are in 3G coverage so I can buy with the app! Several times I have risked running on fumes rather than deviate from the preferred!

I always try and put V power in as well, the most I've managed to get in is around 72lr which generally tallies with a 30-40 mile range indicated.

I think he has an F10 M5, which has an 80 litre tank (hence not very relevant to the topic)
