oh, and the M3 wheels that are on it didn't come with the car either, they were some I bought for my 2.8 compact

Interesting to see how few of these there are on the market now. They're often outnumbered in the classified ads by E30 M3s.

Indeed. e36 seems to have suffered more than most cars for being stripped/track prepped. I know they're cheap RWD big engined, but there are very few 328 Sports/M3s around in decent condition now. I am toying with one as an everyday/family car but wouldn't want a minter. A used but well looked after one. I already have a 323 cab though and I'm not convinced whether it would be big enough. Is there more room in the coupe/saloon? Boot bigger, obv.

There is a nice black coupe with a red interior up for £5k in the classifieds that caught my eye. Needs a few jobs but looks well looked after and no rust.

These are not a cheap car to run. Imho if you want a fun but not ruinous drive, get the 328.

Are they that bad now though? M-tax, obviously, but aren't most things well documented now (VANOS repair, etc.) and so specialist prices aren't too bad? They are old enough that lots of bits available second hand.

I know it was an expensive car, and of course the running costs are still proportionate, but really that bad?

I would hazard a guess it would be a lot easier to find a decent M3 than a 328 Sport. I was in the market for one about 4 or 5 years ago, and they were very thin on the ground even then. The best one that I saw turned out to be a Nikasil car and all I remember was the interior was a bit worn (I was fuming as the guy kept me waiting after I driven for a couple of hours and didn't turn up until it was dark mad). I haven't seen a decent one for sale for a long time.

I've owned a good 328i coupe and now own an evo which ive had for five or so years.

The evo is a good one, but still throws up expensive/time consuming jobs on a frequent, regular basis. It's an old, high performance car.

I'm about to go outside in the bloody cold to refit my double vanos unit which i rebuilt over xmas. It was a sodding nightmare.
