It looks like the battery on my '08 E93 M3 is on the way out. I've had a look at it's a fully OEM batt so could possibly be the original.

I've looked at various how to guides and vids on how to change it so don't have a problem with that but a few of the things I have read indicate the battery needs to be registered with BMW. Is this correct? If so, how do they do it and why?

Also, would this rule out putting a non-OEM battery in it?

Cheers

Having been through this myself, yes you need to code it to the vehicle because it has an IBS.

The reason is that the car charges the battery based on the condition of the existing battery and so if a new one is fitted the car will continue to charge the new battery in the same way and may overcharge.

You can register it at BMW, a good specialist with BMW diagnostics equipment or by yourself if you have the kit and software available. Do a search online and you will find instructions. You can buy the battery at your local BMW dealer and they will give a good discount if you push.

You can go non oem but if the amps are different you will need to code that in. BMW one is the safest and easiest option.

even a BMW battery will need recoding, as it's charge hold/rate will be significantly different to the old one..
