Looking at buying a used f10 m5 . Why is it hardly any for sale have anything other than the std stereo ? The one I tested had the HK upgrade which I thought was good . Is the std system ok ? Is the B and O very good ??
I always enjoyed the logic 7 in my e60 m5 , how does a std F10 system stack-up ?
Any feedback appreciated .

The HK in an F10 M5 is better than the Logic 7 in the E60.

Not heard a standard system on the F10 & although the B&O is noticeably better than the HK, it's definitely not £5k better.

I have the standard system in my M5, it's OK you have to turn it up, if I had my time over I'd get the HK wouldn't spend the money on the B & O as a car isn't the greatest base for a sound system so you're really up against it trying to create a lovely sound.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, the 'standard' HiFi on the pre-facelift IS the Harmon Kardon system, it just doesn't have any badging (it's badged 'professional'). Might explain why you're not seeing any talking about HK and those that are are probably people just talking about the standard system.

The only option was to upgrade it to the B&O (which few did).

I believe on the post LCI cars the HK system is now badged as such, but is still the same 'Professional' system.

Hope that helps

I don't believe that's correct. From memory on the LCi cars, Professional is standard, HK is the 1st upgrade & B&O the 2nd upgrade. On pre LCi cars, standard was standard, Professional was the 1st upgrade for £400 then HK the 2nd upgrade for £800 & B&O the 3rd upgrade for insane money. BMW

The standard LCI system is called "BMW advanced" 205w 9 speakers 7 channel amp, then HK 16 speakers 9 channel amp and 600w then B & O 1200w 16 speakers etc....

Regardless of what it's got - THIS is what you want! smile

Can personally vouch for the setup, having had it in my E70. Mindblowing.

Thanks for that link , very interesting .

I think I need to listen to each the options to see if it is worth searching , or just basic plus aftermarket .

I had the Stage 2 Plus installed in my E70 and the results were astounding - better than any install I'd had in any car and way beyond what I had in the living room at home. My only mistake was not going the whole hog on the Stage 3 since all the car lacked in the end was a convincing bass on the move (whilst static it was fine).

The install was so OEM I wouldn't have any issue having the same done again (or more) or recommending it over the OEM system. Sounded amazing. Just can't justify it on the 1er otherwise I'd have the same install.

No, my Jan '13 M5 has the S677 Professional DSP and is the HK but without the HK badging on the front tweeters. If it has the chrome centres in the front tweeters it is the HK.

I have had pretty much all of the systems, the E60 Individual one was great, the F10 Harman Kardon ok but definitely nothing special, and the B&O in the F15 X5 and frankly not really any better than the HK in the F10. The G31 Bowers & Wilkins in my current car is probably the best of the lot.

So to answer the question of the OP: Go for HK at least, the B&O is nicer but not a dealbreaker, and if music matters to you, avoid the base system.

This. Intrigued so just referenced my brochure library smile
Pre LCI has 676 BMW business as standard with 677 BMW Professional as a £330 option. No HK / B&O options.
Post LCI has 688 HK or 6F2 B&O as the options.

In car hifi is such a subjective topic. I have B&O in my F10 and I wouldn’t say it’s worth the money for me personally. It’s very loud and doesn’t distort but that just causes the trim to rattle. 😂
