I didn't regret changing from an E39 M5 to E60 M5. As great as the E39 was it was getting on a bit . Their is nothing I prefer about the E39 over the E60 M5.

That's completely the opposite for me I went back to an e39 ( my second ) after 2 e60's . The e39 is a class act - mine is just being resprayed with new front wings fitted ( no other rust ) and will be further refurbished over time . The e60 was dominated for me by the crap smg ( shortly after buying the second one I remembered why I didn't like it ...) .
DCT in the f10 makes the e60 seem very poor - the e39 manual is a joy to use . The e39 also doesn't need you to wring its neck all the time to make progress like the e60 does

As much as i love my E39 M5, I am not sure why the prices are climbing. I have recently had it serviced and resprayed as there were some scratches that a neighbour had put in for me and some coin dents.

It does not get used much, living in London prefer to use the Honda Jazz as it is much easier to park and care less about. But that being said not sure i want to let it go now. It has worked its way under my skin!

Was this a full respray? If so how much did it set you back?

I had a really lovely Estoril Blue low-miles (<50k) E39 M5 for about a year and sold it to another PH'er. They are truly fantastic machines and I'm very happy that I ticked the box. I picked up a 1M about a week ago which is another special //M but very different to the E39.

I agree the E39 M5 is a great car. Wonderful actually. I've had two of them, and wish I still had one in the garage.
But...they are at the age where keeping on top of things can be a very expensive business, not to mention frustrating.

I may be in a minority, but for me the ownership experience is massively enhanced by the reassurance of relative youth and a manufacturer warranty. A good example is going to cost certainly north of 10k, perhaps 15k+ for the best. And that's for a car that needs a lot of upkeep to drive properly, and to keep the bodywork in good condition - not to mention potentially throwing up a painful bill at any point.

I'm not a particular fan of E60s, but for a few grand more than a good E39, you could get a nice AUC example. Or an E92 M3. Leave it a couple of years and F10s - which I think is a return to form for the M5 - will also be in the mix.

Don't get me wrong - I love the manual box, the relative simplicity and the design of the E39. But judged against what else is available for the cost of a good one, IMO a newer, fresher M car with a warranty makes more sense.

I have to agree with the above. Running an E39 is like having a needy but very talented child. They need attention to keep them in tip-top condition. They are also quite long in the tooth now. My 1M feels from an entirely different era and is a great package. Sure it does not have the drama of that fantastic S62 motor but it has a character all of its own.

I agree about the warranty of auc being reassuring but it isn't a cheap warranty to maintain and that cash can buy quite a bit of refreshing of an e39 .
Anyway I have perhaps the best of both worlds with an e39 and f10 ( and the f10 to me is the best m5 ever and I've owned them all except an e28 )

There's no reason why a higher mileage, well maintained, good condition M5 shouldn't command a plus £10k price tag

I'd welcome thoughts on this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-M5-5-0i-V8-E39-Saloo...

It looks a bit pricy for 100k miles, but it also looks very tidy. Am I just a bit out of touch?

They say buy on condition and not mileage. That looks a bit over priced mind.

For an old car that's a lot of beef

Perhaps a little over priced but it's a late car with good history and Walkers are a very well regarded specialist around here so I'd expect it to be a good one for them to sell it.

Selling my e39 m5, prices seem to vary a lot. Mines done around 92000 miles which it's pretty low for a 1999,had it up a few places but had no real interest so thought I'd try here.

Just started looking for an E39 M5 and have spotted this one. Any views on the price at £14,995. It is a 2002 with 101,00 miles with 9 owners! Seems a touch pricey looking at what else is out there...

I too, I have been watching them for ages and inspected a few. There is definitely and 'M Tax' and almost all that I viewed (a great number) even from Millennium Heroes etc all had signs of obvious wear that were undeclared and would definitely add £000s to the purchase price immediately, and that was just to the body.

The prices now are a bit silly. Last year I was offered a late 62k model for £13,250 and I could have sold it this year with circa 75k and made a tidy profit(!) not that I would have done.

However, the majority are puppies and will need constant attention. As my experience mates said when I was looking "If you can't afford to pay the good prices from Hexagon, you can't afford to run the car". A touch of exaggeration, granted, but for the cost vs benefit you have to be looking at paying upwards of £17k now...

There were already a lot of rough ones around when I bought mine about 5 years ago. I paid a premium for a low mileage one in great condition and have been loving it ever since. It has just turned 70k miles and is as great as ever but I'm not really sure you'd have to spend as much as £17k to get one like that? Would be glad to be wrong though :-)

Apologies for the late response. It was a full respray and cost me circa 1k. I had a couple of other bits done along the way. Somehow seems to be using more fuel with a respray!

I have been keeping a keen eye on values. Of course, one cannot say what they actually sell from. The £13,250 example that I was offered with 62k miles was advertised at £16k...
