I looked at buying one of these and drove a good few used examples from 44k to the horrendous nightmare clocked 130k.

Important to call BMW UK CS, give them the reg and follow up the service history with the BMW main dealers quoted - they should be able to tell you when it had a clutch / flywheel. They will need one approx every 40-50k - a 70k car that hasnt had one or doesn't need one is a unicorn.

I also had a good long chat with Munich Legends in Sussex about them. 2008 will have the upgraded SMG pump so that's less of a worry. When it arrives get the engine pressure tested by an M sport garage. Check for jerkiness pulling off slowly in D, or even in first in S-something (sign the clutch needs replacing, but if replaced recently less to worry). Redline it in second a few times, check it doesn't drop into limp mode (the tech at Munich said that there were a number of pressure sensitive electrics in the engine management system that can go wrong and whilst not expensive require a full engine lift so labour-intensive) - however they will trip. If you can also redline it in third that would be better but anything higher and you'll be breaking many, many laws.

Best way to also look after the gearbox is to not slip the clutch gently in first. What I mean by this is (obviously, safety first) but try and engage the clutch plates firmly when you pull off rather than gently - give it a lump of foot rather than a very gentle pressure from a standstill and then ease - this will lengthen the life of the clutch by years. Obviously this is not a huge lump of foot as rear tyres aren't free, but look for positive engagement.

That said, I'm still looking at buying one (i actually think red looks pretty menacing with blacked out wheels), because nothing else I've tested seems to come quite as close to the sense of ludicrous pantomime theatre, whilst having close to 500l boot space and effortless comfort. Maybe a merc SL 500? Doesn't sound half as good as that v10 with an eisenmann exhaust.

Thanks for that , so 2008 is less of worry on 1 thing !!! bit lucky as didnt know that ha ha i will get test done by bmw & sort my pull away out , normally step on it anyway ...
yes i agree , its quite hard to get a car that suits needs , i sold my 911 but it had rear seats/ cheap to run/fast/looks nice /reliable.... only bad point about it was very hard with our crap roads & wife dont like gears ... ....
so i think i have a good compromise all my boxes now ticked. someone on here said its miles away from 911 but i dont think it is , yes its not a track car like 911 but i dont track .i also get nicer /luxury inside with loads more extras ...
cant wait for Tuesday

It is miles away from a 911. Not saying which is better or worse, they're very different cars. The M6 will be much more comfortable, has a mental engine but lacks the steering and braking feel and will feel a bit more of a barge. But it's much quicker in a straight line, I think you'll love it.

Good luck and post some pics when you get it!

2006 models (pre facelift)

Sold at 72,000 miles.

Car was still under BMW AUC warranty remaining till end of Nov 2015.

Everything that gets regularly mentioned about them going wrong was sorted.

This was mine

nice looking in that color , shame would have been for me , mine is a fcelift model i have been told , and its only rear lights that are different ?? bit strange if that's all ?

You can either embed the URL of an image using the {img} and {/img} (substitute [ and ] for { and }) or use the "upload an image (beta)" ling on the "Reply to Topic" page.

2008 model LCI ( life-cycle impulse ) facelift, LED front lights and back lights. Also the centre brake light was moved from the rear window to the centre of the boot lid. Brake light on the facelift is a long strip within the spoiler part of the boot lid, facelift M6 looks better from the rear. The facelift M6's are very thin on the ground.

Only 2 more sleeps to go!

ha ha 2 more sleeps ... cant wait for Tuesday ,why are face lifts rare ? been looking at the settings for driving home ? very confusing all this d1 or S5 ?? is there a thread that is simple to read ? how do i know if its face lift car , i know its 2008 but cant really tell if the lights are different to the rest of m6 i looked at ?
with settings i understand you push m button for 500 hp , can you have a normal road setting (if so what are they ?) then the M button settings (if so can i have them ?) for play time ?? I have booked car in for muffler delete and some nice chrome tailpipes on the way home ha ha
thanks

Do not use D1 it is tragic! Pushing the gear knob to the right will change from D mode to manual mode, push once to change and then again to revert back if that makes sense. Gear change speed button just behind gear knob, keep pressing until you are on the max setting S5 ( with DSC on ). Push down on the power button just in front of the gear knob so the orange light is on, this is the 400/500 bhp button, orange light on = 500. Use manual mode by tapping the gear knob backwards and forwards depending whether changing up or down ( took me a few days to get used to using the paddles ).
This mode will be fine for driving home. Don't forget they have a very small fuel tank and only get about 250-300 max out of a tank on a run.

Where is the advert and I'll tell you if it's facelift.
BMW simply didn't sell many M6 2008 onwards, they obviously weren't that popular by then, hence facelift are hard to come by on the M6.

Go into the iDrive system you can set what the M button does, default I think is edc sport, 500hp, fast throttle response, S6.

S1-5 (and 6 in M Mode) are the severity of the manual gear change.
D is just "automatic" (but not really).

Do not get a muffler delete until you've driven around with the stock exhaust and are absolutely sure that you want to get it done.

Along with the ridiculous and unrefined sound you'll lose power and torque.

so the default on m button is pretty set up well then ? its just i read that you cant also have a default for normal drive , that the car re sets to i think D1 every time ? some other threads say that the car remembers but not sure ??
Bit of a pain if you have to change settings every time you turn off ?

lose power ??? i read that quite a few people had this done , sounds good , cheap & is quicker as the cans are very heavy ?
I have heard a stock one and would like a bit more noise, but i did ask on thread & nobody really came up with good solution , i dont mind up to about £1300 ish for new exhaust but i wont pay £2k and over as out of budget ? there is a make on e bay that is about £1200 brand new

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111358083635?ssPageName=...

, but nobody answered to if any good , open to suggestions really ????

Never heard of that exhaust on e bay.

Eisenmann sport are good quality, probably over budget though. Eisenmann race will be way too loud. The cheapest new exhaust will be Hayward & Scott. A full delete of rear boxes will be too noisey. I put mine back to standard as the noise got on my nerves after a while.

Your right soft close was an option on the facelift M5 only, not sure about the M6 but I suspect the same on M6 facelift. You will find out soon enough!
