Just got car , it has electric folding mirrors (on a button) but not on key fob ? I have read that you have to get dealer to programme fob ? is that true ? Is there a charge ? you would think that would be a standard setting if the motors etc are on car ? Defo want that as they are first to go .....

I have no idea about your car but on my 3 series, if you hold the lock button on the key fob for about 3 or 4 seconds, it folds the mirrors?

That is correct, you have to press the button near the mirror controls to fold in the mirrors. If you want them to fold in when you lock the car you need to have that programmed by the dealer or somewhere that's got the kit to do it. I thought it would annoy me on my M5 as my wife's Volvo you can switch this feature on/off yourself via the info screen in the car but I've never felt the need to get it coded I just press the button when getting out of the car. I could probably code it myself as I have the software and cable from laptop to OBD port but it's not an issue. The dealer won't do it for free, ring them up and ask how much they will charge it won't be much.

They maybe correct, mine is a 2006 M5 model so slightly different. Maybe worth trying an independent specialist, where abouts in the country are you?

It is something that can be programmed. You need to fins an independent who is good with coding the modules with the factory NCS EXPERT software.

Or start reading one of the BMW forums/Googling about coding.

I asked about this at our local BMW dealer and was told they turned this feature off by default as BMW were getting to many warranty claims for failed motors in the folding mechanism.

I just push the button as I get out now.

Yes it was turned off. But with NCS EXPERT you can turn it on again. NCS isn't the dealer diagnostic/programming software, it's factory developement software that escaped in to the wild.

Great news.

I bought the cable and software and did my own coding, it's not too difficult lots of how-tos out there.

In 2006 my 330i did fold mirrors from the fob

In 2009 my 335i didn't fold mirrors from the fob (told by BMW it was removed for Health and safety reasons WTF?)

In 2015 my M6 DOES fold mirrors from the fob

Seems like a bit of indecision on BMWs part?

Or a better folding mech design that can actually cope with daily folding for at least as long as the warranty lasts?

I don't fold the mirrors on my E61 - the sound they make when folding is not pleasant and suggests there's metal-on-metal friction that's not conducive to long term reliability. There's at least one thread on M5board about taking them apart and trying to lubricate them but I think rainwater and road spray will get in and wash it out again before long.

yes the guy at coding shop is was just down to warranty issues, easy to remove for some bullst story (health & safty bullst perfect for that ) then if it dont work it wont break. mine getting done next week £60 he said 95% work but has had odd one wont ?
