Hello all,

Had my F10 a few months now and it's growing on me more and more.

One thing I have noticed is that the car seems to generate more heat than other cars I've had of similar power and use.

On my relatively short daily commute to the station of approx 6 miles the fan then kicks in and stays on for quite some time once I park up.

Does anybody else notice this and is it normal ?

The engine is a "hot-vee" - the turbos are in the vee rather than the more conventional position on the outside of the vee, so to avoid a heat-build up under the bonnet, the fans are programmed to stay on after shutdown, if necessary to vent the additional heat.

I remember reading that the M5 is very robustly engineered from a cooling perspective with 10 separate radiators - witness the former ring taxis driving around the Nordschleife all day long without (AFAIK) modifications in this respect.

According to this write-up the electric fan sound you hear when you turn the ignition off (exactly as mine does, in any ambient temperature, and regardless of how it has been driven) is actually driving an auxiliary coolant pump which cools the turbos as well as the engine itself:

My M6 does the same and it's all about stopping hotspots when you switch off as others have said so don't worry. TBH I think the engines run remarkably cool under the bonnet compared to other big HP cars. Hopefully with some de or sport cats my under bonnet temps will drop further.
