I've been looking for the right car at the right price for a while now and while a number of cars have sat on the site for a long time, the majority of cars that come up competitively priced from the start tend to shift quickly.

I missed out on a 64 plate, fairly low spec but 20" wheels and service pack (most of the ex-lease cars don't seem to have this) and just 5k miles was listed at £42,995 sold in a couple of days. It was orange which is probably a bit marmite, however the majority of other 64 plates are over £5k more and have now been sat for a while. Stratstone Derby have 3! which they keep dropping by a few hundred quid that they have had since at least December. Must be a nightmare to shift, particularly as I understand their policy is that they don't negotiate.

I don't really get anything used around the £50k mark or above as you might as well buy new with the £20k discount available. Some of the pre-registered cars are actually more than the discounted new price.
sounds a bit too low; did it miss its RIS or something? Missing RIS voids warranty!

No it was an AUC car and had running in service. As you say probably too cheap but very little over £45k shifts unless well priced.

I meant the bulk of used will be ex lease, it wouldnt bother me lease or not, my point was to say these cars hang around like a bad smell at the dealers so you just wait till you see one go in and count, towards the end of month 3 you start your talks. I saw a couple hang around at Dick Lovett, now all vanished so probably hit the 3 or 6 month off to auction route.
Ex lease cars hang about because they are base spec. having 20's is a big thing on a lease car.

I have noticed the M5's with high spec literally get snapped in a few days max.
There were two I seen with the LED adaptive lights and they literally went within 2 days. They went at the stated price too.

Most people do seem to go for the 20's though it seems, whether leasing or not. I rarely see an M5 with the standard wheels.

I do think they look good but preferred to spend the money on non-aesthetic options like the LEDs you mention.

My car is essentially base spec. and I have 19" wheels. I have side window blinds and rear windscreen blind but that's literally it. I wish I had a reversing camera, but cba to retrofit it.

The higher spec cars seem a bit overpriced - I know its because they've got more spec, but I just feel that you'll never get that premium back when you come to sell it later on down the road.

I always felt the car was very well specced as standard, so added just the reversing camera, lumbar support and a towbar. I hate the trend towards big wheels - for a road car I prefer ride suppleness over outright grip, so 19s were perfect for me.

Some absolute bargains out there - perhaps I might track my car down in a couple of years and buy it back for nothing!

I went basic too, just HK and sunblinds.

Regarding wheels, I think the 19's are the nicest wheel design to come from BMW M since the e46 CSL.

My logic was that it has more kit than any car I've ever had before as standard, and come auction time, if I want to buy it then I might get a bit of a bargain if it's viewed as poverty spec.

Whats HK system like? I do like the multispoke effect if I'm honest, although I do wish that they were just a bit lighter in colour (more hyper silver)

I wouldn't be bothered whether a used M5 had the 19's or the option 20's. The only thing that puts me off the 19's is they look like they are a pain to clean compared with the 20's .

I'd prefer 18s if possible, just for better ride!

Have you tried the black car at Guildford? I nearly bought that ages ago and they've reduced the price by £1k

That looks like a nice car, even if 'base' spec.
Make a slight issue about it not having a reversing camera and im sure he'd let that go for £38k or so

No, its quite local too. Just not convinced about black exterior and black interior, would prefer a contrast. Plus felt price was and still too high for spec.

What was it like and why did you decide against?

On the subject of wheel I started off definitely wanting 20" wheels but am actually starting to like the 19".

Depending on how clean you like to keep your car / what level of dirt becomes an eyesore for you, I've found Silverstone leather to be a high maintenance but high reward experience. I had to protect it with Dr. Leather's Dye Block (I know the name sounds cheesy, but the guy who owns the company is a huge leather expert, read about him here: http://www.drleather.com/Home/About-Dr-Leather-Ltd... ), otherwise the seats were picking up all sorts of dirt very quickly. They still do get dirty of course, so still require regular maintenance.

However, when its perfectly spotless, a set of clean light grey/white seats are probably one of the most satisfying things to see.

Having said that, I would have chosen black leather if I had a family or even a partner. At the moment, I'm the only person who ever sits in the car. If I had to get black seats, I would have definitely gone for a Monaco blue exterior.

Personally, I never found the Sakhir interior to be well suited towards the 5 series. It was a bit too loud and overly contrasting, even with Sakhir Orange exterior! I suppose it might just work with a white exterior, though.

I had the Silverstone interior. 3 kids. No problem at all although they were banned from eating anything sticky in the car. After a few months there was a slight colouring of the bolsters on the driver's seat but this easily cleans off.

I just decided on a 991 instead, it's a third car and seemed silly to not get a 'sports car' rather then super saloon. It's a really nice car, I am sure they will do a good deal now.

Really? o.O

Are you sure it wasn't protected in any way? Sounds better than my experience! Its this on an F10 too?

My experience is the same as Harris_I's, I have Silverstone and 3 kids - no marks yet.

The drivers bolsters do suffer if you wear jeams - mine are blue within a few weeks but it always comes off. Leather was treated with Gtechniq products as part of a protective detail when new, so that may help.

so its just me who gets in using his hand to protect the stitching on the side bolster!

Yep. No protection whatsoever. A blob of leather cleaner every 6-9 months. And yes, an F10. It may help that most of my jeans are really old so no fresh dye to rub off.

The guy that collected it at the end of the lease said this can go straight on the forecourt for sale. Like I say, I may hunt it down in a couple of years to buy it outright if it was treated well in the interim.
