My current car is due to change later this year and I'm really torn which way to go.

I really, really love my F10 M5 and have always thought I'd simply get a second once this lease finished however I feel I need a different shape for a while.

I've had three X5's previously and regardless of those who don't like them I have nothing but good memories.

We know the 40D is pretty good but the 50D has a certain amount of interest based on the 700nm's of torque and the near on 400bhp along with 5 seconds to 60.

I know it's not an M5 but would I enjoy the car for a month or so and then think.....fk, what have I done?

Anyone have one of these and has anyone actually got any first hand experience with the M5 as well as the X5 50D?

Oh Ho Ho, this has got to be a No No!

You have to drive an M5 when going for it, whereas with one of those things, you just point and go.

Perhaps amusing for a week or two, maybe a month, but sooner or later, you'd need treatment.....M5 therapy!!

Big diesel mess?! You'll regret it unless you just want pub talk numbers.

The 50d has 168hp per tonne or about the same as a golf GTi the M5 288hp per tonne, that's a huge difference just be prepared for that.

What about an X5M? Or an M6 GC?

Isn't the 0-100mph the key test here the M5 is what an 8 second car and the X5 50D is what? I'd assume 12 seconds - certainly a fast number and only a tad slower than the C5 RS6 and E39 M5 but totally different ball park to the M5.

I'd wager the fuel savings will be negligible.
So is it the 7 seats the fact it's a rare car or the visibility?

How about the V8 diesel Cayanne? It's as fast/if not faster than the original Cayanne Turbo which when launched was in the press as being incredibly fast..

Not quite the same but I thought the same a few years ago and changed to a nearly new, very high spec E70 X5 4.0D Sport.
I absolutely hated it, it was a rattly pos that ate tyres. The ride was atrocious and the interior rattles were unbelievable.

The service adviser at my local dealer admitted that build quality wasn't particularly good as they were built in Spartanberg and there were teething problems. Strangely some cars were affected and others weren't.

I genuinely couldn't get rid of it quickly enough.

I would like to think the new ones are a lot better, I would get a very, very long test drive if I were you.

I also couldn't believe how other road users reacted to it, it was my first 4x4 (apart from a defender) and people seemed to have a real bee in their bonnets although this may be flashy 4x4's in general?

I do find the X5 M50d very appealing but I would imagine coming from a F10 M5 that it would ultimately be pretty disappointing, I think the X5M and M6 GC are both good options as the other poster mentioned.

I had an X5 M50D for about 6 weeks whilst i was waiting for my replacement F10 M5 & to be honest it was quite a giggle to drive as the straight line thrust was impressive to say the least & when all said & done it was a well spec'd car & looked quite the thing, however it's of course no M car & was a little un-nerving when trying to take corners at anything other than slow speeds. If they currently have some silly lease deals then it should be a car to be considered, but it's very very different than any M & really it's only tour de force is the straight line speed.

Also the MPG suggested was a million miles from what the book stated & in the real world not that much better than the M5.

Ah well, I guess that's the question answered............it's a great car but too far away from the M5.

I'm also looking at a 6GC and of course another M5 both depending on deals at the time of change.

The problem I suspect we all have now become aware of is the M5 is simply such a great DD yes and where do you go from here (AM or similar aside)

F10 M5
7.8 seconds to 100mph
http://fastestlaps.com/models/bmw-m5-f10

F10 M550d X drive
12.2 seconds to 100mph
http://fastestlaps.com/models/bmw-m550d-

F10 535d
13.5 seconds to 100mph (299bhp model not latest)
http://fastestlaps.com/models/bmw-535d-f10

X5 4.0D
16.2 seconds to 100mph
http://fastestlaps.com/models/bmw-x5-xdrive40d

X5M
9.1 seconds to 100mph
http://fastestlaps.com/models/bmw-x5-m-2015

So I cannot find the specific X5 your looking at but have included the X5M and the X5 4.0D but looking at the F10 535d it appears the X5 like for like is at least 3 seconds slower as such it might be 15.2 seconds to 100mph.

The Porsche Caynne v8 diesel is a lot quicker hitting 12's none the less your looking at X5 v M5 it's essentially half as slow / the M5 could go to 100mphband back to 0mph and then wait a few seconds before the X5 M550d has even hit 100mph.

So speed doesn't come close but other aspects might

Of those it's the same engine as the F10 5550D so i'd be pretty sure the same engine in the heavier X5 is going to be slower. I'm surprised it's that slow in the F10 however as would have thought it would be quite a bit quicker than the 535d, but perhaps the X-Drive adds a big chunk of weight.

Yep 13.5 v 12.2 1.3 seconds quicker on what 86bhp more

And the thing is the latest 535d is 18bhp more and more torque so will be marginally quicker too

The X drive as you say must really harm the higher speed acceleration.

I think the A8 4.0 V8 and 4.2 V8's TDIs with well over 400bhp out of the box are the ultimate fast diesel wagons.

I ran a e70 X5 4.0D M Sport (which was remapped to 360 BHP) so close to the 50D figures.

Echo what others have said - dreadful car - ride was terrible (not helped by runflats) and after a year I was very happy to get out of it.

Kids hated sitting in the back, and the interior was lacking - despite mine being a high spec car.

Traded it in for a new F10 M5 and have never once regretted it..

The M5 actually returns better MPG also!

Cheers

Better mpg!!

I'm interested in the rear kids space - did you have 7 seat option or was it the normal rear row of seats not giving enough legroom with tall drivers so legs in back of seats in front issue amplified by car seats/booster seats.

Ditch the run flats and the ride is much more bearable in the X5, but it is a little too crashy over bumps still.
Their appetite for tyres is horrendous though.

Otherwise I really liked the X5 40d, interior was nice, rattle free and well appointed. If it had air suspension It'd have been great, but I generally find BMWs to be over sprung at the best of times.

I wouldn't swap an M5 for any X5 though, M included.
The ML63 however...

I quite liked the X5's I had, it's more the driving experience I'm worried about - as I said earlier once you've had an M5 even a good car like the X5 may seem a little dull.

I went from an E60 M5 to an X5 50i. It was not as quick, obviously, but frankly for a massive, family hack, it was not lacking in speed. Now we have a 40d and it really is plenty quick enough for the task.

(It helps that I have something quicker for letting off steam)

I think you knew the answer before you asked, the M5 is a different car than an X5. The X5 is completely different from a 5 series saloon. Take into consideration that the 5 series is an M5 and the X5 is a diesel then the comparison is no closer and possibly further apart, hey lets throw a Mini Clubman into the equation...

If you want family transport with the versatility for 7 then the X5 is great.

By the way, the F15 is a better in quality to the outgoing model. Test drive one, various engine types, there's more to an X5 then comparative speed, it's a family car, lots of space, a wonderful mile muncher and a really nice place to be.

I had hoped someone might have said what a great drive it is and not a million miles away from the M5.

I'm not bored with the M5 by a long shot but will probably fancy a change and I've always had a soft spot for the X5.

Now what about an X5M scratchchin
