9.1 to 100mph is bloody fast and you could catch the M5 driver napping and he wouldn't be able to catchup/overtake whereas the diesel well it's simply not even close

I had hoped someone might have said what a great drive it is and not a million miles away from the M5.

I'm not bored with the M5 by a long shot but will probably fancy a change and I've always had a soft spot for the X5.

Now what about an X5M scratchchin
I'm looking at an X6 myself at the moment I've always a soft spot for them (I know not everyone's/anyone's cup of tea) On the way back from the dealer the road was clear and I blasted over the Pennines, I haven't done a deal yet but I did think I'm going to miss this power if I do.

You get bored quickly... You've barely had the M5 following a tiny stint in the F31 335d! smile

I do so many miles Welshly that's the issue, find it's better to nip in and out of them, although looking at the deal at the moment I'll be keeping the M5 until it turns to dust.

Ah just seen you do 31k annual miles in an F10 M5 mpg does make a difference over that distance

I ran a e70 X5 4.0D M Sport (which was remapped to 360 BHP) so close to the 50D figures.

Echo what others have said - dreadful car - ride was terrible (not helped by runflats) and after a year I was very happy to get out of it.

Kids hated sitting in the back, and the interior was lacking - despite mine being a high spec car.

Traded it in for a new F10 M5 and have never once regretted it..

The M5 actually returns better MPG also!

Cheers

Steve
Better mpg!!

I'm interested in the rear kids space - did you have 7 seat option or was it the normal rear row of seats not giving enough legroom with tall drivers so legs in back of seats in front issue amplified by car seats/booster seats.
Yes had 7 seat option but the issue in the back was more due to ride harshness rather than room. 7 seats were used maybe twice, it's not practical to get into them as the 2nd row didn't allow easy access to the 3rd row. Coupled with the fact the boot retractable hatch cover thing didn't fit if the 3 row was used was a PITA too.

MPG in the X5 regardless how I drove it was always 24. M5 on a run does better than that.

It is indeed! The M6 GC is lovely though, and you can guarantee you won't be losing any performance. What about and RS7, RS6, S8 or E63? Or even panamera turbo?

Audi's have never really done anything for me and the manufacturer would have to offer a fairly large incentive to make me consider moving over to an RS6 for example (which in fairness is a more practical car now we have a dog!)

I've had two new cars from Porsche and one used and with their current attitude towards customers I've sworn never to buy another.

The E63 has the most wonderful noise, does nothing for me in the looks dept (which is a shame)

I think an M5 estate would probably fit the brief to the letter........shame frown

Good discounts been offered on the RS6, 13-14k. A friend has taken delivery of one I drove it against my M5, thing is it's very Audi, looks the part outside and the interior is nice at first glance but not as good as the M5's, the drive is best described as fast and clinical, no soul, no edge to it, which many will think is brilliant but it's not an M car rival IMHO but you can't knock it for hitting the customer demographic and design brief.

He thinks it's unbelievable and leagues ahead of the M5 as if it was a Ferrari FF or Bentley speed but I guess that's Audi drivers for you.

How about a CLS 63 AMG shooting-brake?

I haven't driven one, but I can imagine it is great at putting the power down which could be appealing for a daily driver in the UK.

I guess so.... I find the reality of the rear stepping out on the M5 is a bit scary, probably because I don't feel like I know the point at which it will break traction and I don't feel confident in controlling it when it does happen. So the majority of the time I keep the TC on, which means the power gets killed as soon as the wheels spin. Probably just down to my poor car control, but it does make me wonder if, for someone like me, as a daily driver and in the UK, the RS6 would be better.

Ok, I ran an f10M5 from new for just over 2 years, but by October last year and with the weather changing, I was looking to change.
For me it was an easy decision. On a lovely warm day, with plenty temperature in the tyres the M5 was epic. For the 8-9 months of the year in the North-East of England when it was cold and damp it wasn't.
Not much fun sitting in Motorway spray, feathering the throttle on greasy roads. I'm not kidding, I remember one Autumn day when I couldn't keep up with a diesel Astra van due to issues getting grip.
I borrowed an X5M, which left me amused, but cold. Compromised ride, but faster than an M5 in most real world weather. Contrary to some comments, I found the build quality on the various X5's I tried to be much better than my m5.
It is simply a much more chilled, relaxing and enjoyable way to travel, 90% of the time when going about normal failing driving of sitting around. The road are so busy these days, the opportunities to really push the M5 were increasingly limited.
Eventually I factory ordered an X5M50 which I got Christmas Eve. With a £12,500k discount and a high spec, this came in at £59k. Looking at the comparable deals this came in £31k cheaper than an similar spec X5M.
I think the M50d is tremendous value for money and as a daily drive, unsurpassed. Round the doors it is plenty quick enough and is has an almost V8 soundtrack when pushing on. 2K in averaging 30.4MPG compared to 21.8 from the m5.
I am in the very fortunate financial position to be able to drive pretty much whatever I want, but still like that feeling that I am getting value for money from my purchases. I also have to justify them to my wife!
For me, from my experiences, 95% of the time the M50d is a better proposition(and better value) to live with than either the M5 or X5M. Maybe if I was running only one car, I would feel different, just to get that extra smile on the right road?

A spanner in the works! I can completely understand what you mean, the traffic where I live is getting so bad that I'm starting to question if there is any point in having a powerful car at all.

I never get the chance to stretch my M5s legs at all anymore. Far too busy and far too many idiots hogging lanes and of course cameras everywhere.

God I sound like an old fart...

Yes it can be a frustrating experience, on the traction front I remember going for an overtake, 1 van and old dear in a hatchback, only to stare in amazement as they pulled away from me as I sat there sliding around behind them. laugh
