I unintentionally had my standard M5 spinning its rear tyres in 6th gear last night while short-shifting onto a motorway access road. This was with traction control on.

Honestly I'd get the geo / tyres checked - if you're near me you're welcome to come for a passenger ride to compare. I was tanking around on throttle to the floor on 2nd gear - on dry roads and temps at 9 degrees there was no traction control light smile

Thanks for the offer.

While I don't think I've ever floored the car in 2nd and the bank end has not attempted to step out, the drive I referred to was in cold and damp conditions at night (with rock salt remnants still on the road).

I always found with all cars I've owned that have some serious grunt the rears are sensitive to tread and I have new tyres fitted when tread is at 3mm.

In stty conditions wide far tyres simply can't move the muck without a decent grove on the tyre.

I'd be getting your engine checked !! There is no way that if you simply floor the throttle in 2nd you will not see the traction light flashing ( unless it's off )

Thatsmile

I see the TC light flash through to 4th on hard upshifts in the dry, in the wet i don't bother as it's permanently lit (just kidding as i turn the wick right down for the Winter season).

Even in the Summer i'd still get a squirm into 3rd but was never an issue as could stay on WOT through the gears.

Engine is perfect - thanks smile

Honestly I cannot believe you guys are having issues on dry roads when temps are above 8 degrees - I'm loving the throttle to the floor moments !!!

Nope, I can try and get my passenger to film it next time.

All I can say is that is honestly my experience!

I'm in the 'don't have too much issue with traction' camp! Of course one can over power the rears easily, but it's about feel for throttle application; my M5 is a highly rewarding driving machine which i predominantly use in MDM mode. The progressive way traction can be achieved (or not) is actually a significant part of the attraction of this genre of car!

Pirelli tyres won't help with traction, MPSS are much better. However in this weather the TC light will be a regular sight if you boot it regardless of tyre make.

I've had plenty of powerful RWD cars, and I have to be honest, the traction on this car is poor. Tyres have done around 4K miles, I don't hammer it at junctions/roundabouts , yet I seem to nearly always have wheelspin/tc cuttting in when trying to pull out.

I've been out in the snow tonight twice. Competition package F10, and it was fine. I do have the winter tyre package.

Ditto. Yes the M5 doesn't have great traction but that goes for anything front engine/rear drive with 560 horses in the wet. Treat the accelerator like a switch and the dashboard does light up like a Christmas tree. It may be a generational thing? I learnt to drive in cars from the 80s and 90s and maybe subconsciously consider it a badge of shame to have the TC light up?

The M5 has traction issues you could reasonably expect a rwd 550bhp+ car to have; particularly noticeable in less than bone-dry conditions.

When I was younger the 996 GT2 (aka 'The Widowmaker' for its speed and traction issues) was a dream car. As I'm sure is the case with most on PH, part of my attraction of such cars is whether you can tame them.

I wouldn't say i'm having issues as i'm firmly in the 'car only rarely has caught me out' camp, but having tracked the car many times in great weather, i rarely have a scenario where the TC light doesn't flicker in 2nd & 3rd when pushing on. Doesn't happen every time, but in the lower gears i'll often see a flash, however this doesn't always mean i can physically feel that the car's lost traction. Worth noting mine's putting out close to 750bhp, so that could be the cause to inducing the flicker, but stating again i find the traction in mine even with the enhanced outputs to be very good-excellent.

Makes sense, my one is standard - is the remap worth it or is it too much for the car to take unless you feather the throttle?
