Im going to look at an e60 m5 this week and the car is still under warranty with bmw, its got full dealer history also. The car has done 80k miles and had a clutch done at 35k miles, so it's obviously done a few miles on the clutch. What im wondering is if i buy the car and the clutch goes will it be covered by warranty or not?

If its being bought from a BMW Dealer, I'd ask for a written addition or condition of sale that warranty covers the clutch..

Ask to check the T+C of the used approved warranty, and see how its worded, the phrase 'fair wear and tear' will no doubt pop up a lot! could be worth checking what the ££ damage would be should you be left with a clutch to change for worst case scenario? then chip dealer on asking price according to the clutch repairs if they wont give written cover?

I asked this question a few years back of JCT600 over a Maserati Gransport, and as they eat clutches every 20K miles they wouldn't warrant it, so i walked away, never did buy a mazza!!

I bought the E61 M5 from a dealer in December and that was one of the questions I asked, sadly after a lot of haggling they couldn't or wouldn't throw a new clutch/flywheel in the deal.

I don't think it's covered under the Mondial warranty either unless there's a failure that chews the clutch.

I assume clutch not covered, but if it went pop within a few months then I think they would do something for you...
Great cars, but it's not nice driving around waiting for it to go.. I managed it for 11 months and moved it on before he warranty ran out...

Don't remember having to spend anything on the car, other than on rear tyres... But the clutch and SMg red cog of death was always in the back of my mind...

The car is a private sale and has the rolling montly payment type warranty with bmw, and has been under it from new. I guess its a haggling point if its the only thing that seems like a potential issue in the future that won't be covered by warranty, unless there are any other items not covered worth mentioning? I can live with the general running amd servicing costs but I really dont want to get stung by a big bill if it goes wrong, hence wanting a car with warranty

Bear in mind that you can't simply assume the same monthly payments of the current owner - you will need to get your own quote from Mondial...

Yes im definitely going to check this out, the current owner is paying about £70ish a month, apparently when he took ownership of the car it had just less than 60k miles, but has now done 85k i think. I understand that the warranty cost goes up a lot after 60k miles but surely they are aware of the mileage from when the current owner has made claims.

Not sure if it's even possible, but can a BMW dealer do a pre-purchase inspection and plug it in to ascertain the clutch wear? If so, could be bargaining chip on your purchase.
