Anything can be rebuild if you have the right tools and manuals... And parts... However, the SMG III was a purpose designed box by Getrag for BMW. I suspect that BMW would have Getrag tied up in the same way as that you cannot rebuilt an E46 M3 transmission as Getrag would not sell you the parts and BMW would only exchange the whole box. I never dared to check on the costs involved. When I bought my M5 E61 2yrs AUC was agreed and then I went on the monthly plan as my car was on 47k at the time.
