I have a M2 on order (delivery end of 2016) and I still have to make a decision about which gearbox I want my M2. I did a testdrive with a manual and DCT equipped M2. I have read almost every review about the M2 and how good and involving the manual gearbox is suppose to be. So I also did a test drive with a manual M2.

The clutch pedal felt really soft of the manual...for me it could be a little heavier...but it is not that big of an issue. The movement of the cluth pedal is really long (a lot longer then on my Z4M and e46 325i). I was amazed at how long the travel of the clutch pedal is and that I never saw it mentioned in any review? When releasing the clutch your knee gets really high...the end of the movement of the cluth is rather high (if you know what I mean wink )

With the manual gearbox you can feel the effect of turbo lag a little more then with the DCT. THe DCT shifts faster so there is less drop in rev's. The DCT has 7 instead of 6 gears, so the gearing is also shorter and it feels that you keep the engine more in the powerband with feeling less turbo lag.

Any opinion about the manual gearbox of people who have driven a manual M2 are much appreciated smile

From what I have heard the manual is compromised due to a stupid auto blip on downshifts which you cant turn off unless you turn off all traction control - something most people probably wouldnt want to do on a regular basis in normal driving.

We have a manual. Although we wanted a manual initially, we dithered a little between that and DCT.
Just about every review we have read favoured the manual. So we stuck to our guns and decided manual was for us. Can't say we've regretted it.
Just today I stumbled across Evo's road test (which I hadn't seen previously). It may help you decide between the two, as they are directly compared.

I'm going to order a manual M2...the DCT is not my kind of gearbox (less involving, less driving pleasure, etc)... I have read every review of the M2 and I know the manual gearbox is in favor.. I was just wondering why no review said anything about the long pedal travel of the clutch...not the travel when pushing down, but when releasing... I was wondering what other M2 owners or M2 testdrivers their opinion is about the clutch travel wink

I've owned 3 manual M3's , E39 M5 , Z3 M couple , 2 Manual 911's , 7 Manual RS4's etc etc ...... I'd never owned a SMG/DCT ...... So took out a DCT M4 for a blast....... I ordered my M2 with DCT then SH#T myself and tried to change my build to manual.....
It was toooo late and I recently took delivery of my DCT M2 and I have to say l BLOODY love it !!!!!!!!! It's so good .... Knackered or traffic stick it in drive ( can also have drive sport) at any point just grab a paddle up or down and instantaneously your in control with lightning quick shifts!!! You can push and pull the stick if you'd rather!!!
Proper pleased with the DCT and now wouldn't sway her for a manual

Couldn't agree with you anymore! The DCT shows the true power and speed of this car and I love it! Especially as you can interrupt and take over at anytime. I understand the argument about involvement and feel, but I think most of that was lost on new cars when the steering went electric. Also, why would you want to slow down a sports car or introduce a bottleneck? It isn't even a proper manual anymore with the blipping. This is my first auto fast car and I definitely don't regret the choice. Also agree with the OP about the clutch as I sat in the white one at M Avenue at Goodwood on the weekend and thought the same, far too light. But sitting there changing gears felt too old fashioned for this car. As someone said to me recently, do you want a walkman or an iPod?

The manual gearbox is weak in the M2. The ratios are poorly matched to the power delivery. The shift is woolly and the lever is poorly located.

My preference would always be for a manual gearbox but it has to be a good manual gearbox. In an M2 I think the DCT is the best option.

No tried the M2's manual, but I've been won over by auto's and also by the DCT box.

I even loved the MCT box in my last 640d but I do sometimes miss the manual in my 135i which had the added benefit of the BMW Performance Short Shift Kit...

It's just personal preference really and I've had a DCT/ZF8/ZF6, but for me you just don't get much back from a two pedal car(DCT is an awesome gearbox admitted) so the M2 would have to be the three pedal manual version as far as I'm concerned.

It will possibly be one of the last of the breed of manual cars because DCT rules the day now, so grab a manual while you still can.

Didn't Chris Harris say to get the manual on last week's Top Gear?

Almost every review about the M2 is extremely positive and most reviews are indeed in favor of the manual gearbox. I did a testdrive back to back (manual vs M-DCT) and I ended up ordering a manual Mineral grey M2.

+1 for the dct and as a GT4/1M owner I love a manual box but oddly preferred the dct on the M2 which surprised me loads...

Indeed, this was the case even 5 years ago with the old E82 135i when BMW introduced the N55 with DCT option. The 6MT box (no matter how much people bang on about involvement) just doesn't suit the newer turbo engines.....IMHO.
I went with the DCT on my 135i, and I would've done on a M2 as well if I didn't now need to be looking to get a 4/5 door car next.
The DCT box is just much better matched to the engine characteristics, which to me adds more to the overall involvement.

In a sporty car it's got to be manual for me.

Slight tangent... but 1M or M2?

I've not seen a comparison yet.

R&T compare the M2 with a number of small BMWs including the 1M but that is not the main focus of the test. They test a manual M2 and do comment that it's a much better gearbox than on the 1M.
