Mondial Warranty
Discussion
So every time ive seen a thread about M5 it states get the warranty.
I bought a e60 M5 3/4 months ago had done 51k FBMWSH for around 16k
Go back 3 weeks. Bank 2 died and both vanos parts needed replacing which was done underwarranty. That gets fixed no issues, then on the test drive the engine starts knocking.....
Told them to drop the oil pan to check the bearings they wouldnt do it and insisted the engine needed to be removed so i ok'ed.
Engine is dead spun a shell and bore is damaged. So it needs a new engine!
As they are getting cheaper the mondial warranty isnt great as they only cover the cost of the car. Which is good for owners that bought them 1/2 years ago when they were 18k + for lower mileage example.
As its stands now i dont know what i have to pay extra to get a new engine

They will pay upto and including the purchase price you paid. From other threads I've read a complete engine through BMW with laboiur etc works out about £19,000 which is ridiculous. Would have thought you'd have to make up the extra or they pay you out what you paid for the car, which seems fair to me I remember thinking about this when I bought my Mondial policy, but i suppose you can't expect the warranty company to pay out on a single claim for more than you actually paid for the car.
Hope you get the best outcome possible. How many miles has the car done?

58K is low miles for a spun shell. It's been prooved that regular oil changes and warming up engine properly before thrashing it extend the life of the shells. Trouble is buying secondhand we don't know how previous owners have treated the car.I have a friend who's E60 M5 has done 98,000 miles and he had the shells replaced at about 95,000 as preventative maintenance. My own E60 M5 has done 62,000 including a couple of track days, I've always thought what would happen if mine spun a shell whether it would be agro with Mondial or whether I'd be better just getting them replaced myself for preventative maintenance which is about £1300 inc vat.
I think you've been a bit unlucky to have a failure at 58K. Hope you get a quicker solution than 2 months.

No doubt its crap but if you have to pay £3k you'll end up with an E60 with a brand new engine. You can get the flywheel and clutch done at cost too (as its all out) and you'll have a low mileage e60, under warranty and with a new engine which has to be worth abit more. You might be able to flog it straight away and get more than you paid for it but I'm not hot on prices myself.
I cant help but feel that's a total cop out.
lots of cold starts and short journeys, yes, but totally mileage shouldn't really make a difference.
I can only assume what BMW meant was 'it must have done a lot of short journeys for the mileage its covered'.
you can get used engines for £5k ish on ebay but its a no brainer to pay that for a new lump.

It's per claim but the as it was in for one thing they think it will be added on top.
I spoke to BMW customer services this morning. Apperently the m5 is meant to have loads of miles on it because it's a big unit so low mileage ones go bad
Low mileage doesn't wear out the shells! Maybe lots of cold starts and not taking it easy when cold.I spoke to BMW customer services this morning. Apperently the m5 is meant to have loads of miles on it because it's a big unit so low mileage ones go bad
Their is about a 100 page thread over on M5Board about issues with worn shells ( rod bearings ).
Let us know how you get on. I always wondered how good my warranty (mondial) would have been if i had spun a shell.
I had 9k worth of claims on mine. But as a monthly policy is was under the impression the purchase price threshold 'reset' each month. But is constant rolling on a yearly paid policy.

I'm sorry to hear your troubles, is it a dealer that has pulled the engine and is the history with a dealer or Indy? Just wondering if this has impact on bmws view if it's not. I know you don't need dealer history.
I don't understand how BMW can offer a warranty that isn't good enough to replace an engine, that's exactly why people like us pay for it! Has anyone suggested seeking legal help, maybe just a letter to BMW?

The terms of the warranty require the use of a BMW Authorised Dealer or a BMW Authorised Service Workshop which would appear to eliminate the possibility of a 2nd-hand engine being installed under warranty or the existing engine being rebuilt.
As an aside the Driveline Component Cover is limited to £5K inc VAT so likely of no practical use on an M engine or probably any BMW engine as the cost is likely to easily exceed £5K for the engine alone, never mind the labour.
