Was scanning the magazines in Morrison's yesterday - both Car and Evo have the Alfa, Lexus, Merc and BMW on test. Merc wins. I think the BMW came 3rd in one of them. It's a shame because I think the M3/M4 is the better looking car of the 4. It's just got no soul frown

A C63s passed me on the mway Friday. It was completely indistinguishable from a C200, bar the badge. Bland.

There was just no need for all that torque. They feked up. Who can use all that power in this country anyways. Give me a revvy, nicer sounding engine every day of the week. Cars need to be more fun not more powerful. The M2 proves it.
It's the torque that has finally got an M3 on my list of possible upgrades to my much loved C55 AMG. My shortish commute and school run both offer the potential to ride a wave of accessible torquey power delivery, I just don't want to be ringing it's neck every time I want to enjoy the performance when opportunity knocks. Looks like my type of car tbh though F10 M5 is still top of the list.

I think it drives like a muscle car. Not a bad one either, it's quick and they even got the straight 6 to sound like a v8....at least inside the car. Should an m3 be a muscle car?

It always used to be "You want a muscle car, you buy an AMG Mercedes"

BMW M cars were always NOT muscle cars.

And if you think that the F8x sounds like a V8, oh dear....

Do I get rid of my well sorted E46 M3 with a manual box for one?
I did just that and have not regretted it one bit.

The M3 doesn't sound bad, not what I'd want for the price but it definitely does not sound like a V8.

I'm out in France this week in my E60 M5 and visiting a fuel station everyday ( I am not joking ) . Really fancy a F80 M3 next. Seems just as cheap to buy new at the mo.

There will be no threading M3s/4s down country lanes, not without going rally style and putting a wheel in the dirt anyway.
Not sure if you're being serious?
The M3 is a pretty wide car now and I drive some pretty narrow b-roads where a Mk1 MX5 feels more appropriate. In some places it feels appropriate to dip the inside wheels in the dirt. smile

However, and in defence of the new M3, I took a test drive in one yesterday and against everything all expectations, I really enjoyed it!

Before setting off, I set up the M2 mode to DSC off and everything else to max. On the move, I had to press the M2 button twice to recall my options; once to select and once again to confirm it, but it can be done pretty much instantaneously.

The exhaust note outside was pretty average if I'm honest, but the fake sound inside is quite convincing. It sounded burbly and aggressive and much louder than in the M135i. The thing that really struck me though was just how throttle steerable the car is. A quick stab of throttle is all that's needed to mobilise the rear and get it steering on the throttle. That aspect of it was great fun. I'm not sure how many owners will do that, but on getting out of it, I really felt like it was a good, lively and fun car to drive.

Interesting, is the case? on all cars?

The S65 isn't for me a great engine for our roads though and the F80's engine offers far more satisfaction for more of the time, on a track though I would hanker for the S65 and its hunger for revs and its top end fireworks.
For you Lee, the engine wasn't very good you buddy, for me and many others (engine of the year many times!) it was perfection and has not been bettered by the current M engines in many areas that count.

Wills you have had a great selection of cars, I think I recall you from a different forum - anyhow interesting to read the M3 lci cars had revised rear dampers - honestly the one I drove was horrible but might need to give it another go in a more up to date M3.

Do you find the new M3 handling is just as good as the E92's? Also out of all your list of cars, if you had to keep one forever which one would you go for?

I'm in a 997.2 at the moment, but have had the e92 m3...thinking of buying a limited edition to keep alongside the Porsche but with the intention of keeping it forever. I loved that v8...I had it in manual, but wasn't sure if the 7 speed was better suited to the engine.

I'm not sure actually. It definitely requires 2 presses if you are requesting for the DSC to be turned off completely since it asks you to confirm.

I didn't try it any other way since I wanted to find how easy it was to go from normal to full-attack, so I can't confirm if it needs two presses even if you're not disabling DSC.

It requires two pushes if you have DSC off or MDM mode in the settings. If you keep traction control on it only needs the one press.

This thread has been an interesting read. Although, it's still not changed my opinion and I am still going to buy one in the not too distant future !!

Keep the Porsche, perfect car the 997.2 (so I would have kept that one) As for an e92 m3 I'd look at the frozen silver edition.

The F80 suits my purposes as a daily 30k a year car (modern/frugal/comfy) I think it handles and goes well and looks nice so no complaints from me.

The BMW brand expert or genius told me to press it twice, but that just selects it then the second press de-selects it, I've only ever needed to press the buttons once.
