anything / everything is possible.
as already said, everything is available 'off the shelf'

the software would probably need a small change....to us. spec (as they got the manual gearbox)
I believe the 'manual gearbox' map is already in the dme....it just needs switching over.
there's a different rpm limit when its in neutral (7000rpm)

Here are a couple of pics I took in 2006 at Hartge.- they had stuffed a V10 into the 3 series, and added manual............

I wonder how hard it would be to replace the SMG with the DCT? Mechanically reasonably simple I'd guess. Software might be an issue.

BMW did it with the e60 m5 csl concept

There's a long thread on M5 Board about this with plenty of info. Like you said, hardware seems reasonably straightforward, coding and software less so:
