Don't exceed 5000rpm I believe. This will be hard, considering 90% of the power is over 4000rpm.

Why the new engine? Warranty extension has certainly came in handy here !

Don't baby it, unless you want high oil consumption in the future and for ever.

Drive out of the dealer, put it in a fixed gear, use 70% throttle up to 3.5k and then back off until near idle three times. Then same again up to 4k three times, and then up to 4.5k, and again up to 5 and the 6k. DO it all in the first 50miles, then drive it like you stole it.

Cool - just get them to trash the gearbox for a new one too and you'll have a nearly reliable car! wink

It's having a new clutch while it's all apart anyway. So it should be pretty reliable. Just going to get the bearings changed every 25k now!

IME with the S85, break-in has very little to do with oil consumption. The rings never really seal against the alusil bore.

The biggest improvement with regards to oil consumption on this motor is to scrap the ste oil control ring BMW used and choose one with a more modern design. I've done this on a few rebuilds now and it helps immensely. BM makes lots of motors with identical bores...

As for break in, keep in mind the DME stores operating characteristics of number of times the motor exceeds various RPM levels. If per chance that is reset with the new motor, it would be apparent to them when you take it back for the running in service. From a risk averse perspective, I would stick to the OEM break-in recommendation if you intend to maintain warranty on it.
