Depends, have you owned the car from new? Serviced on the button, kept the engine stock etc...? It's a strong reliable car if looked after.

Mine ran like a dream over 31k but I'll admit it was brand new, I've heard no horror stories on stock cars loads of people running big power without issues as well.

But if it's a 2nd hand one the only issue you have is not knowing how it was treated before you got it.

I've seen a lot on Auto trader, high miles (80k+) , motorway cars for 30k.

Which is tempting compared to say an E9X M3...

But they are completely different cars, you won't find what you see in an e92, in an F10 or vice versa.

Nope, would be a second hand purchase. It's either one of these, a C6 RS6 or rebuild the engine on my E39

as an ex owner of both the e60 and f10 M5 I would be happy to run a well looked after F10 outside of warranty. The gearbox and especially clutch seems much more reliable, the engine is based on a standard motor and doesnt have 1000 sensors to run it (I recall it was something like that which BMW cliamed on the v10) and the interior is of course standard 5 series for the purposes of being out of warranty.

Yes, I would do it and probably will within a year smile

Don't think I would chance it. The one I viewed last week had over £20k of warranty work during it's 27k mile life including a new engine. 1 private owner, not a leased car.

That's interesting the second ruined engine that's been mentioned of he F10 in a matter of threads.
Are these boosted up engines or hammered hard or simply a weak point?

I have a feeling these engines, replaced under warranty, were due to excessive oil consumption as per BMW guidelines.

This was probably caused by babying the car too much during the first few miles of life of the engine (read first 500/1000 miles).

I think these engines are super strong with quite a few US examples of them running over 800 HP with zero issues.

Can't see it being as bad as an e60 out of warranty.

How often do you hear of DCT issues in comparison with the SMG cars?

A warranty list from a dealer is always going to look bad, they just replace loads even if it's something relatively fixable with a bit of know-how.

Friend looked at one and the dealer took some time to bring it round. Thought nothing of it and after a good test drive left a depoist after a deal was done. Got the train up week later to collect it & again was made to wait while they did something to the car (was told just giving it a final once over for him)

3 days later he put his foot down and the dash turned into blackpool iluminataions. He took it to work ( he was a bmw tech at the time ) and the fault codes list was as long as his arm. It needed 2-3k's worth of stuff. Rang the dealer they wanted to see it so drove back across the uk. They wanted to fix it but he demanded his money back to which he got and he walked away.

Good luck but I am sure that was just a lemon, not all will be like that.

Ye,p these are very strong engines our US cousins are very quick to shout about issues on the forums and there's not much to see on M5post regarding these engines being weak.

I don't think there's any issue whatsoever.

I've owned mine since new, purchased 2.5 years ago. I'd usually swap it within the next 6 months, but will happily run it for another 1 - 1.5 years.

Personally I would have a warranty.

These are complicated pieces of engineering and if anything goes wrong BMW will simply take your pants down and make you take it like a man.

In 32000 miles in mine I've had limited issues but some which would have added up had I been paying.

They certainly feel really well made and the engine is a work of art however it is still what it is, an expensive car with expensive running costs.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I think if I were to get one I'd want a warranty, just in case, so that is off the table for now!
