Thanks for your replies guys.

I think if I were to get one I'd want a warranty, just in case, so that is off the table for now!
Your current fleet says M5 which series is it? E34
E39.

What are the options in regards to an extended warranty?

Why would you risk it? A warranty wise warranty with a single repair up to £6k is only £800pa.... without negotiation. If a headlight went, it would cost nearly that!

The headlight is no different to other F10's.

I run boring normal F10's and I wouldn't want one out of warranty.

So really the fact much of it is a normal F10 doesn't really add to the no warranty argument.

I wasn't being literal, just making a point that small things can amount to lots of cost, £800 is nothing when owning one of these. Whenever I've had a warranty I get everything fixed... misty windscreen (new windscreen please), misty light cluster (new lights please), squeaky window mech (change that please).... you get the idea. When I'm out of warranty, I can live with these things.

A little back ground I was hit in the rear in my 06 M3 comp pkg it was prestine one minute and totaled the next. All said and done I got a check for 150k. I paid out the door for a 2013 M5 with 38k miles 50k cash. On Feb 10,2018 at CarMax.
No warranty yikes !! But my M3 was out of warranty as well, so this is an upgrade I took the VIN # to BMW my service adviser I knew for over 10 yrs he ran a warranty report that showed all service done and previous owner which happened to be a Asian MD. And they did a CPO CHECK and passed, it was a good car and well and proper maintained with no mods. I’m a enthusiastic driver and put on 2k miles with no issues what so ever but I can see rear tires in my future.
These cars have herendes power so really no need to mod them ( drivetrain ) just to cause you problem if you do they will have issues then you will say how terrible the car is, not admitting your the idiot that caused the issues.
As a second hand car they are reliable and dependable even out of warranty. Have fun and mod to make it your own but leave the drivetrain alone and you will be a happy camper!
My mods so far is a exhaust valve tide open and resinator delete (both).

On the exhaust aspect what decibels does it now run at idle and also full rpm? Does that still meet the specification for a vehicle to be suitable for the road?
Kit cars have strict noise test to pass but you’ve taken a road legal car and as I understand it make it straight through exhaust so surely it no longer is legal (or very very close to the limit?).

How does the insurance get impacted by those changes ?

If you buy a used F10 M5 and it’s under 60k miles but not from a main BMW dealer & it’s not had the extended warranty can you at that point put it back on or is it tough titties?

He did:

let you judge which it was - I suspect brave and unlucky...
it would certainly put me off buying one - esp. after 24,000 trouble free miles in the e39 version...

Mind that's an e60 he went for in the end, not an F10.

I've run one from new (2015) and have done 47k miles in it and it has been 100% reliable. Warrantly ran out after the 3 year mark which was back in August 18 and I have gambled on nothing going wrong and so far it hasn't. Has been the most reliabe car i've ever owned along with my R35 GTR.

I've seen an M6 I like the look of which is a BMWAU so at least I'll get a 12-month warranty. 14 plate with 55k up for 27k which seems decent value its also just had disks and pads done which is a bonus.

Possibly, but the failure wasn't the cars fault. I cannot legislate for vandalism done to my engine on purpose, and nor is that the cars fault. Unless of course no one told the guy I used that you should not take a hammer to the oil pump?

How close is it to being back on the road?
It’s a very very special engine doubt we will see another like it.
