I have kept my E92 M3 longer than I expected, not sure what to change it for as it is such a fantastic car. The engine is superb, the only faults are it needs a longer sixth gear and a bigger petrol tank. otherwise near perfect.
So out of interest how long (or short!) is 6th in a manual E92 M3? Different character of car but my manual E92 335i with the N55 engine was, from memory, around 30mph/'000 in top which gave pretty relaxed cruising on a motorway; my E46 M3 was more like 25mph/'000 so still not too bad. Assume the E92 M3 is a bit shorter geared than the 335i but presumably no shorter than the E46 M3?

It's interesting and shows how different aspects of cars appeal to different people. I absolutely love my M4 and pretty much everything about it. Out of the cars i've owned over the past 30yrs, i'd say that taking everything into account it's the best one so far, and i've owned a few: 997tt, 996tt, 968CS, 3.2 carerra, 993, 997S , 325i, E36 m3, E46 m3 x2, 135M, 1M, rs3 , rs4, golf gtis, AMG
I totally agree I have just got back after doing 3000miles across in France and absolutely adored driving my M4, I to have many performance cars Elise r, exige s, focus RS mp350, Cayman s, boxster spyder, tvr Tuscan, vx220 and they all excited me but the sheer experience driving the m4 for me has been amazing

I am exactly the same except you should have got the dct as it has an extra gear smile. Mine is a March 2012 and I was only supposed to keep it till it was 3 but haven't a clue what to replace it with, so have decided to just keep in and enjoy the 8400 redline smile.

In "top", 80 mph is about 3200rpm in the DCT and about 3300 in the manual, so there's negligible difference. The main, most noticeable difference between DCT and the manual from a gearing perspective is the closer ratios of 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the former.

Great cars. I had two - one manual and one DCT. I'd have another in a flash.

Had the car now for 3 weeks ,

It's absolute motoring perfection . The seat position , the old school feel of dials , the paddles are perfect weight and size and do we really need to go on about what a triumph this engine is ??? The way it revs can only be compared to a Ferrari and it sounds amazing as well .

I've had some serious cars in my time including r8 , f430 , 997 2s , 997t Gen1 , 991s , and before the m4 a c63 .

Without doubt the m4 was bottom of that list

The m4 was a disaster , I really wanted it to be the best car ever but just could not love it , sterile fake engine noise and jumpy handling .

The e92 without doubt is a future classic and I urge any petrol head to to go out and buy one because u will not ever regret it for one second ..... Ok maybe the fuel economy will cheese u off .... But for circa 30 k for a car if this quality and almost certain appreciation the next 5 years for the right car ..... Who gives a monkeys !!!

Well done bmw

I class myself as a petrol head rightly or wrongly but I regretted buying a E92 M3 pretty quickly.

If I'd experienced the cars you've experienced I just can't see how a 3 series with a nice engine would be motoring perfection, but appreciate we all like different things though.

I'm curious as to why you felt that way?

I've had my E93 M3 for just over a year (and 4,000 miles) and it impresses me more and more each time that I drive it. Like most on here, I've also had a reasonable selection of interesting cars (mostly Porsche and ///M), but I've certainly never regretted buying the E93.

Yeah the M4 is not a great car at all. No wonder quite a few owners over on m3cutters are getting out of theirs.

I'm now thinking of just keeping my E92 M3 for another few years.

I've had my 2013 E92 M3 from new and I love it.

Was wondering whether to chop it in for the M4 when they came out but I'm glad I didn't.

I've just given it a new lease of life with an ESS supercharger. It retains the high-revving characteristics of the magnificent V8 engine but with an added kick...!

Do you prefer the E92 M3 to the M4 as well Ross?

Granted I am a broken record but I prefer the M4 to the E92 M3.

I would never in a million years call a 3 series or a 4 series motoring perfection like the OP, and I just think it's a silly statement to make.

I should have said real world motoring perfection ....

Ie Get in car , sounds the nuts , great old school v8 , a dct gear box that as as good as any today , kids in back , go shopping and while doing all that the high reving crescendo and down change blips make you v v happy .

Of course a 458 speci is a better car .

But what bmw do with the ( some ) m cars for a fraction of price is astonishing .....

Yes the f80 is astonishingly quick and can do 30 mpg abd has head up display . I owned the car for a year , it was soulless and numb . It's sounds dreadful no matter how much you pretend or convince yourself it does not .

Bmw are aware of this and I look fwd to the next m3/m4 which I'm sure I will get safe in knowkedge bmw will totally smash it after this Cock up

100% agree on everything you've said about the e92 other than one thing.

The seating position is fking awful.

I'm looking at an aftermarket option just to drop me down. After driving a Kia Sportage for a weekend I got back in the M3 and felt like I was sitting on the car. This is compared to a Sportage.

It does take a lot of dicking around to get a comfortable seating position.
I'm happy with mine, but it is set quite a big higher than I am used to.

hehe - you are definitely a broken record!

In my opinion the M4 is superior. It is quicker, has better suspension, much better brakes. It looks better (E92 just looks a bit ordinary by comparison) and has a much nicer interior. I agree that the V8 sounds fab, and the M4 sounds different. But I like the sound of the M4. The disabling of the fake interior sound and the addition of a manual exhaust valve controller make a load of difference.

I don't get all this M4 hate! Here is Chris Harris's take on the F80 - https://www.goodwood.com/grrc/road/the-goodwood-te...
