Interesting comments.

In contrast the E92 M3's I've driven in the past left me a little cold, and I think the "legendary" engine note extremely over-hyped...
I drove an e92 m3 for two years and whilst it is heresy on here to say, I also think the engine is a bit overhyped.

I had the popular exhaust mod which improved the sound somewhat but nevertheless it wasn't that exciting to drive.

It needed a lot of revs to get any performance and the lack of low down torque often made the car feel heavy IMO.

I'm probably in the minority but the E90/E92 model of the M3 has never appealed to me in the looks department. Always thought the E46 M3 was much better looking and the F80 M3 the best looking M3 by far, the M4 I'm not keen on the looks. Also for me the E90/E92 isn't very practical as the boot is too small for my needs to make it practical as well as fun. Back seats too cramped as well. Most of you will say nothing wrong with the space in the back but It's just too small for my needs.
Can't comment on the engine but I never got past the looks stage on the E90 M3.

Can't wait to get into an F80 M3.

I feel the same towards the e90/92. I completely sidestepped it when I sold my e46 M3 and bought an Impreza Sti with PPP.

I currently have an M4 and don't seem to have any of the handeling issues some people go on about. For me it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Some of the technology in it is excellent and the performance is up there with some seriously more expensive kit. Regarding the noise, I bought my car based on more factors than just how it sounds. If I wanted something that sounded good and had OK performance I would have kept my AM Vantage V8.

So what you're really saying is that you are modified your driving to get around the issues - as there is no way that undulating roads and WOT in the first 3-4 gears is not a recipe for disaster.

You cannot have that much power (bhp & low down torque) going down just the rear wheels, with no material weight bias over the rear axle and not experience significant traction loss when opening the throttle.

BMW are good, but they cannot defy physics.

This mirrors my experience of it too, although I think that engine could work in a much lighter car.

If I could have put that engine in my TVR I think it would help eliminate the lack of low down torque feeling, the 3 series is just too heavy for that engine for me.

You should modify or change how you drive a car based on what it is and how much power it has accordingly. I would not have jumped into my Aston and drove it the same way as I drive my M4. I would not drive my wife's Touareg the same way I drive my M4. You should alter how you drive a car based on what you are driving. You would be stupid to approach all cars in the same way, it would be a disaster waiting to happen (I mean this in the context of anything reasonably powerful, most small/mid size cars could probably be driven by a shaved monkey).

So, like I said, I do not have an issue with the handling of my M4.

To add, this statement applies to any powerful rear wheel drive car.

"You cannot have that much power (bhp & low down torque) going down just the rear wheels, with no material weight bias over the rear axle and not experience significant traction loss when opening the throttle."

yeah - what annoyed me when i owned the m4 was the reviews saying it had a jerky gearbox around town (1st gear). they drive it like a standard torque-converter automatic and cant understand why its not smooth...
