Hi,

I'm writing a feature for Modern Classics magazine that includes the BMW 1M Coupe. What I need is some expert knowledge on these cars – or at least something that outweighs what I know about these cars, which won't be hard

The questions I have are:
• What should you look out for when buying one?
• What are the common problems that owners can experience with these cars?
• Any tips for looking after one long-term?
• What’s the rough price of a good example of this model now?
• In your view, what’s the best thing about them?

Anything you can help with from the above will be greatefully received, either on here or direct to russ.smith@gmx.com

Thanks in advance
Russ

I have had mine since new and it has just passed 66,000 miles. Tyres can be expensive, Michellin Pilot Supersport improved the ride for me. It hasn't had any faults so far (touch wood). The rear arches do attract stone chips so if you can find one with protection there then that would be a bonus.
The service intervals are roughly 20,000 miles but I have always had the oil changed every 10,000 as I don't like long service intervals.
The BMW garage always offer me £40,000 whenever I get it serviced or MOTed in the hope I will buy something else, not sure whether this is the actual value of the car or not.
The best thing about it for me is it is a reasonably discrete (in black anyway) fast car which is fun to drive but quite practical for mundane tasks. The acceleration from 20 to 70 is epic and always makes you smile.

May be of some help what problems owners have logged over the past few years.

As mentioned already- between certain speeds the 1M acceleration is epic.......
The sweet spot is 3rd gear and 3500 revs- put your foot down and it truly flies.
It feels considerably faster than my 991 GTS which was 100bhp more at 430bhp.

Black is discreet but many collectors seem to want the launch colour of Valencia orange which looks
awesome but does attract attention from the local boy racers...

Collectors seem to want orange, what makes you say that?

BMW created the Valencia orange paint especially for the 1M and used it in all the launch promotion -
it has since been made more widely available solely because BMW were surprised at how well it was received.

I know 2 blokes who collect M cars - both have VO 1M's and both told me not to consider black or white-
VO is seen by many as 'the' 1M colour.....if a distinct new colour is used in all the launch promotion it
often becomes the iconic colour associated with that car.......

According to BMW UK cars were ordered in the following numbers:

Alpine White- 150
Sapphire Black- 132
Valencia orange- 168

And yet- looking at the classifieds there are always considerably more black or white cars available-
right now there are 21 cars for sale on PH and only 4 are painted orange, it's simply far more sought after.

That said, Chris Harris just bought a black one.
