I'm thinking of chopping in my 997 C2S for a new daily - an E92 V8 M3. I have always love the engine, almost as much as my old V10 M5's one, and it is a wonderful adjustable car in coupe form, perfect for occasional track use as well. But I want a cabrio because, well just because.

So any advice or comments on this as a daily and occasional track car? I know it will be less ideal than the coupe and with the roof down, perhaps more tail happy but with roof up is it so compromised to be absolutely rubbish? I'm not a legend so perhaps will notice only a very poor comparison with coupe.

And what is it like as a daily? I don't care about fuel consumption as I have a short commute (and hey I used to have an M5). Is the EDC essential to get the best out of it?

Is the iDrive setup in the latest ones comparable to the last gen stuff in 5 series/X5's?

Any other observations?

My brother in law has a DCT model without EDC and he loves it, he only uses it occasionally but loves how he can take his mrs and 2 kids out in it.

I had a Coupe With EDC and other than the scuttle shake I didn't find it handled much different at all.

The chassis still delivered under hard cornering I thought.

I agree on the EDC comment. All the M3 forums rant that EDC is a must have option but I totally disagree.

The difference is very subtle, perhaps its just because i don't drive at 10/10ths everywhere and have yet to track the car.

I have recently sold my m4 which was completely underwhelming and bought an edition 500 e92 dct .

I've had a series of ridiculous cars including r8 , f430 , 997 2s and 991s and just before m4 a c63 .

Hand on heart bar the fuel economy the e92 as absolutely perfect .

It Quick enough , handles like a dream , is perfectly comfortable ( mine does not have edc) and most importantly the engine sounds insane and the way it revs is absolutely perfect .

Do not hesitate for one second , by a low mile used approved network car and I'm sure without doubt will be a future classic

I have driven the coupe on track and road and I know (fuel economy aside) it may be one of the most perfect cars ever made - and interesting that you moved "back" from an M4 (which does not interest me at all, I'd much rather keep my 997).

What I'm really interested to know however is how the E92, ahem sorry E93 M3 cabriolet works in real life, how compromised it is, how diluted the coupe experience is with the higher weight and different balance.

If I had to buy an E9x M3 it would be the coupe.

I found the body flex terrible on the convertible under pretty normal driving circumstances never mind hard driving. I'm not a fan of the shape of E9x M3's at all (to be honest that whole 3 series range does nothing for me). But what I really dislike on the convertible is when looking at the profile where the rear of the roof runs down next to the boot looks just odd to me.

Owning an E90 M3 and driving E93 M3s around our car park I could never put up with the body flex if I owned one.

EDC is also a waste of time IMHO. I wouldn't let that put you off one.

Would agree that the coupe edges the cab in a number of ways mentioned above. However, if it is a cab you want then that is what you should get. Do not compromise on what you want just because some of us have a bias towards one or the other. For some the ability for open top motoring is worth some taking a small hit on driving dynamics, but then the joy of hearing the V8 in all its glory compensates.

Thanks all. I have bitten the bullet. OK it sounds awesome. Only a V8 will do (or a V10) for sound porn. It seems very slow next to 997 but then you realise that it doesn't have as much low down torque as the 997 and you have to rev the nuts off it, which is no hardship. So it sounds lovely and it is (just about) fast enough.

The big question - what does the flex and the weight over the rear do to handling? Actually a lot less than you might think in my view. The only way to test a car properly is on a track, which is tricky to arrange, and the next best is to take it and drive it with conviction over some challenging roads. I did so over the Wicklow Gap (think of a mini Brecon Beacons) with the roof down and didn't think it too bad. The normal M3 steering has as much feeling as Donald Trump has for Mexicans but I was expecting that. It's a much softer tool than the 911 but it is not at all bad. In fact if you start out from the proposition that you need 4 seats and would like a cabrio and want something that won't disgrace itself or kill you with frustration in a bouncy bendy $hit chassis this is the car. I have my proper hoon car (a 458) and this is a better fit for the rest of my life. You could (and I did today) take it over the WG or a hoon and have nearly as much fun as in a 911. You would not keep up all that easily and on the extreme bits the softness of the chassis would scare you but not anywhere else.

So it replaces the 997. With a hint of sadness at the loss.

Well done Ming. I have a E92 M3 coupe dct and it's quicker in a straight line than a 997 carrera s. Surely the convertible's extra weight doesn't affect straight line pace that much?

Hi Bigtime, I'm not sure. It just seemed slower than a 997 to me. Perhaps it's because you have to rev it more and it has 1000rpm more to play with. I'm sure the difference when measured is actually marginal.

I drove a 997 C2s gen 2 pdk back to back against an E92 M3 DCT and there wasn't much in it at all.
