Been very tempted by the B8 Audi S4; I read with re-map it's a very quick car. However a lower miler under 4 years old is around £25k. I also love the look of the 640d GC or coupe (also about £25k) however don't really want a diesel!... However I see that the F10 M5 is now about £30k (the top of what I would spend on a car). Reading on the net the mpg does appear roughly acheiveable in the high 20's so thats ok. I appreciate that a full set of brakes is about £2k and the tyres on 20's aren't going to be cheap. But on any performance motor none of these are cheap. Is there anything else that could be noticably costly on the M5 that I should be aware of that may sway my thoughts? Im probably going to be doing 20-25k miles a year. Any thoughts/notes/comments would be appreciated. Thanks

I've just come out of a 63 plate F10 having covered 32000 miles.

Interestingly the car didn't cost too much to run, average mpg over that period was 18 but I could get 30 on a run being very careful.

Budget for rear tyres every 10000 miles, you may get more mileage out of a set but I didn't and fronts are good for 20000.miles.

I had new rear pads at 26000 and the car will within 3000 miles need new front pads and disks and probably new rear disks shortly after. My service costs over 32000 miles were just shy of £2000.

The next service on my old one is also an inspection so I'm guessing a bill of circa £2500 from a BMW dealer, of course you could use an indi and save money I'm sure.

Bearing in mind I had a BMW warranty (and personally I wouldn't run one of these without a warranty of some kind) I think you need to budget £200 per month for running costs plus fuel plus insurance.

What I don't know is the life or cost of the clutch however!

They certainly seem to be a very reliable extremely fast bit of kit and if you can afford it you'll have a great drive, every drive!

But they are complicated super cars, just bear that in mind.

Can an Indy be used for servicing if car is under Bmw warranty?

What do people think a 12 reg with 80k on the clock would be worth in 2 years time?

An early F10 M5 with 80k on the clock in two years time.... Probably around 15-20k tops.

High 20's is in lala land - if you are planning on that kind of economy you may as well buy a diesel as you will be driving more slowly than a 535d/640d.

Plan for 20mpg, but that means 1,000 to 1,200 gallons a year on petrol alone.

I've done nearly 60,000 miles in my M5 now and hoping to secure a project that will have me driving 20K + per year for work for the next 18 months. No way I'd do that in the M5 - I'll buy a mini diesel to run alongside it and hang on to the M5 until deals start appearing on the next generation.

HOHOHO seems to have covered everything... MPG is 30 mpg on a gentle run but soon diminished by the loud pedal. genuine supercar performance for very little running costs in comparison.
Many have the 5yr service plan too like me so no servicing costs (apart from brakes and tyres) for 5 years.

From what i have read the M5 seems to be alot more reliable than the S4. And in a different league (especially mapped vs mapped)

20-25k a year is the issue for you and I think it makes the M5 very expensive to run unless you have deep pockets.

4 x rear tyres per annum (£1000)
2 x front tyres per annum (£400)
1.5 services per annum £1000-£1500)
New brakes each year (£1000-£1500 fitted)
New brake discs?
Warranty (£1500k per annum)
Insurance (????)
Fuel (£6.5k per annum)

Just rough estimates of course!

If you are doing a lot of motorway miles rear tyres will last in excess of 15k more like 18k (amazing i know)
Get one with the 19" wheels then against an S4 tyres may be an extra 1-200 a year.
As said many have service plans included which only costs 1k for 5 years when car was new so get one with that and servicing is nothing.
Brake pads fitted from an indie is £600 a year..? but again if just long journeys pads should last quite a while.
Again against a S4 probably virtually nothing in it..
Fuel will be more like 5mpg worse on a run and 8mpg around the doors.... for an extra 2-250bhp isnt that bad

Thanks.. sort of what I was thinking/hoping... not a massive extra cost compared to anything else but a lot more car. I imagine s4 servicing not massively cheap and I have a good BMW Indy very close to home that I currently use.

Depreciation probably the biggest issue!

Yes depreciation is where real cost lies.... but at 30k for a 4yr old 200 mph super saloon who cares

Depreciation is always factor when a car is outside PCP age. They then normally drop to the standard personal loan values of around £20k and below quite quickly, however I can't imagine these dropping below £15k for a very long time, given the performance.

I've just bought one and was surprised by the higher than average insurance costs. My last car was a £60k Aston V8V that had half the safety features of the M5, yet my £30k M5 was 50% more to insure!

I'm getting about 12mpg in London, but I only do 6k miles a year so can live with that.

FYI I test drove the RS4 and these are far more fun, although with winter around the corner, I might think otherwise pretty soon! wink

They are cheaper to maintain than a GTR that's for sure lol. I've had my R35 since February this year and spent over £3,000 on maintaining it, covering services, tyres and ECU software updates.

I'm looking at an F10 M5 next too, good feedback in this thread. Also looks like there are a few at BMW dealers under £35k used.

Does anyone know when production of this M5 model ends? I know some really good E92 M3 deals went when the production was closing up, wouldn't mind spec'ing a new car through Peter Vardy..

I use mine in a similar way to how you'd be doing albeit less miles but I'm on 21k on original tyres and brakes. No additional costs other than some oil top ups in the first 10k.

I will be selling soon within your budget if interested!

Not sure when last orders will be taken but it must be soon. As they have released a final performance LE of some sort i believe.

The M5 with discounts is imo the best value car available on the market. I think you could get one circa 53k new, as they were down to that a few months ago on broadspeed but have rised a bit since....

Wow! That would be quite a car for that much. Personally, both me and my wife prefer the looks of the M6 but the M5 makes more financial sense from a used perspective.
I just need to sell the GTR first now

Yeah broadspeed currently offer them at 55k but am sure some bartering at a dealers you would be able to improve it that may take quite a bit of bartering that is obviously a standard car but the standard spec is tremndous!

M6's have bigger discounts but obviously the retail is higher to start with. I heard my local dealer knocked 30k off one that was speccd up in the showroom.
