Hello everyone,

Looking to purchase my first M3 and I know these models are going to be on the rise soon with that cracking V8, my dilema is that I love the look of the saloon and with the DCT gearbox but in a few years time is this the one that is going to hold its money well ? ( hold is probably too strong a word, not looking to make a profit )

I know this is crystal ball stuff but would be interested in hearing peoples comments.

Cheers in advance

These will fall before they rise.

IMHO, DCT suits the engine better.

Two ways to look at it long term:
There are few manuals...so they will fetch a premium
Nobody bought manuals because the DCT is so much better...so manuals will be worth less.

Currently manuals fetch significantly less and are hard to sell.

There are few saloons because not many people bought them.
But Saloons are hard to find so currently fetch a premium.

A saloon with DCT is a fair bet if you can find a nice one at fair money.

My advice would be to buy the one you want. DCT is good, best with later software, the extra cog and slightly closer gearing are a better match for the type of engine. But... I always felt it was a little too good, it takes something away from the experience of driving the car.

The manual is fairly typical of other m cars, longer throw and a bit clunky around town. A cheap way to improve them is the shorter f10 m5 knob and a £5 clutch stop. They tend to be cheaper to buy, they were circa £3k less new and generally tend to be earlier cars, around 2007/2008 before DCT was available. BMW stated better residuals on the finance deals so most were DCT.

In terms of residual value they will never stray too far apart manuals are rarer especially on later cars and special editions, there will always be buyers for them. DCT will be more popular amongst the masses and if it continues to be reliable then I don't see that changing. Some of the edition or competition cars in rarer colours would be a decent purchase in either form.

I've noted that prices have stabilised recently, earlier in the year there were cheaper cars than i'm seeing now, m4s are getting cheaper by the day so may impact things when the gap starts to get more narrow.

I bought a low-mileage saloon with DCT 6 months ago. Having a real dilemma - enjoy it or keep the mileage down.

First thing to establish is whether you like DCT?

Technically brilliant but not very involving IMO.

I have just bought a coupe with DCT, no idea where values are heading but E46 M3 prices seem to have strengthened so I would hope E92 prices have not got that far to fall, they are a complete bargain at 20kish at the moment.

Not bothered about making money on mine, I don't think it should loose a fortune either which suits me fine.

That what I was thinking, for 20/25K it seems like a bargain and with it being the last of the proper M cars ie non turbo I thinking this could be the time to buy.

I really want an E92 M3 too, but realistically its going to be a couple of years before i can buy. hopefully they stay low for a while.

I will be going the DCT route.. from driving many miles in BMW's i have concluded that most of the time I am happy just using my right foot and hold on / enjoying the ride, suspension and sound wink

I have had a few manual bmw's too, and whilst its great to bang the box from gear to gear it can get tiring on long hauls..

each to their own, but i think its all about your driving preference, how many miles you do, how often you will use your car..

If its just a toy for blasting around maybe a manual..
