My E61 M5 had 3k on parts today paid via the warranty, 2x idle actuators and aircon compressor.

So that's 4.5k for parts this year alone not including the labour!

Question is what's next??

No chance, as long as the warranty can be applied, I won't sell. Like her to much! Perhaps end of next year I might ground her as I have a hankering for a C7 RS6.

My E60 M5 had x4 Vanos solenoids and diff seals a couple of weeks ago, £3K according to dealer. Both throttle actuators in January, £2K. All covered under Mondial. Had mine 3 years and still love the sound of the V10.

In the 5 years I had my Z4MC under AUC & Mondial, it had a new engine, new diff, a couple of wheel bearings, both headlight washers, wiper relay, 2 PDC sensors - over £15k worth.

Makes the £800/year I paid seem like a bargain. Car is on 150k miles now, and the only major thing it's had since I let the warranty lapse - at 100k as the cover dropped off dramatically - is a clutch & flywheel at 140k miles.

The Mondial cover is a great product indeed.

Can you still have warranty past the 100k than?

Yes, if you were on the monthly policy I was.

The other benefit was the price did not increase until you took a break or sold the car.

The only difference seemed to be that once it hit 100,000 miles you were only covered for non-wear & tear mechanical issues, and may have to try and argue that anything braking after 100k miles was a defect and not just wear and tear.

Considering I'd just had a diff (which, according to some dealers is a 'consumable' item with a expected lifespan of no more than 100k miles) then I thought I'd not get much more out of the policy.

Just to add some balance, if I had taken out the warranty I don't think I would have claimed a single penny in 3 years. Since I've had the car I've had:
- Replacement coolant hose: £80
- Blocked washers: £50 or free DIY but I couldn't be bothered
- Replacement door membrance: £90
- New battery but that's not covered

All below the £100 or £250 excess threshold smile

It's a tough call.

I had a nasty experience running my first x5 (v8) out of warranty; it cost me about £5k or more with various engine woes which would have been covered under the Mondial warranty. The annoying thing was that I had extended the warranty for a couple of years and it was a year or so after I decided not to renew (when the car was just over 6 years old) that the issues reared their heads. So, I was kicking myself for not shelling out for the extended warranty. During the years when I had extended the warranty, I had made a few smallish claims and it did seem like the warranty was a bit of an expensive luxury.

With the m5, there's no way that I'll be running it without a warranty. Even if I don't claim on it, it's peace of mind knowing that there is at least some scope for shifting major expense to the warranty provider.

BMW should feel ashamed of themselves. How can they be producing cars that are so prone to failure. All I tend to read is don't buy one without warranty. Unless this is par the course for every high performance car, I would not buy an older M power car as they are literally time bombs waiting to happen.

Sorry, I suppose this should be another thread.

All high performance cars have there woes no matter the manufacture/marque, you pay to play and to be honest, there isn't anything I would change it for.

I know the new M5 is proving to be reliable, but after a test drive I felt numb.

I've had my E61 M5 for 5 years and roughly 35K miles and extended the warranty after the 1 year AUC warranty ran out. The warranty has covered 2 sets of VANOS solenoids (back when they were cheap!), a throttle position sensor and both throttle actuators. It hasn't covered a leaking diff seal (repair cost less than the £250 excess), clutch/flywheel and battery. So the warranty hasn't paid for itself but I have it for peace of mind against a major expense/failure. So these cars aren't all doom and gloom.

1. I wouldn't sell an E61 M5 with the prices going up!

2. Keep the warranty going as long as your keeping the car!

3. Dont sell it!

to be fair you can refurb the throttle actuator for £200 or less.

Keep the M5; the RS6 would bore you silly if you enjoy what makes the M5 special.

Are the prices really going up? Given you can enter E63 bi turbo routings for mid £20k and itthey are constantly coming down ditto the F10 M5 I'm struggling to see how he E60/61 will get above the F10 (remember it's only a couple of E39's now which are advertised above the cad D E60's.

Less than 140 on the road now, only built 220 worldwide.

Low milers are still demanding strong money, 25-30k

Current M5 will dip to mid 20s over the next 6 months.

There are not many C5 RS6's but they are not going up in price.
There are not many B 5 RS4's but they are not going up in value.

If it does go up and you own one a quality problem but articles like that might give punters a false view to buy one with the view it's going to sky rocket in value.

Disagree, I have owned three C5 RS6s and two B5 RS4s

The good RS4s are fetching mid twenty, two of those where imola recently. C5 RS6 hit rock bottom 3 years ago and are now climbing, however they make running a M5 look cheap.

Time will tell however the signs are there. I'm not really that bothered but I do like owning something which is a rare sight on the roads, I have never seen another.
